Trouble shooting New Holland 892 reversing gearbox

I just bought a New Holland 892 chopper with electric controls. The fellow told me the clutches in the gearbox had been replaced not long ago and it cost a lot of money.
The gearbox tends to slip a little under heavy load with a 140hp tractor. I've followed the instructions in the manual for adjusting the clutches and limit switches but this does not really help as they did not seem to be out of adjustment to begin with!
Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks
David

I should add that the slippage problem was in very heavy, wet, sticky, ryegrass windrows. I'm getting ready to do corn and can't afford any stoppages.
The neighbor swathed the grass with a new Premier 14ft windrower. It made a perfect looking windrow on top, but inside it bunched it into little piles. When it fed into the chopper it did not feed evenly and was always running big slugs through the machine. I broke a pile of shear pins and then the clutch started slipping.
I suppose the thing to do is take it apart and put in new parts...
I will add in reference to the windrows. Our old Hesston 6600 did not make as pretty a windrow or pickup the down material as well, but I could actually feed it into the header!

David, I doubt that the clutch engagement is backing off. The roller in the slot does go "over center" a little bit. By hitting forward, you probably put a little more pressure on it. Anyway, if you can't find neutral and the clutches are reasonably set, I'm sorry, but that is a sign of worn out clutches. What happens is that when they slip too much, they get hot as the dickens. When they get hot they warp. Once they warp it is almost impossible to find neutral. Remember, before you do anything, 2 fresh gallon ot Dexron 2 oil, ok? Steve

Hi David. Although I am not a fan of this gearbox, they do seem to work fairly well if set up properly. David, does the electric motor run back and forth the whole way or does it lack power to pull the clutches in forward completely? How did you adjust them? Did you use that guide with the slotted notch or did you actually check foot pounds of torque to make it slip? I set the forward clutches to slip at 180-200 ft lbs and the reverse to slip at 40-50 ft lbs. Let me know how you make out. Steve

If the clutches are worn out does neutral go away?
Sometimes if I hit the forward switch again when it starts to slip, it will catch again. I am pretty sure the motor is going far enough but could it back off just a little?

Oh, by the way, if you have been slipping the clutches, even if it was just a little bit, CHANGE THE OIL!!! Use 2 gallon of Dextron 2 ATF fluid. VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP FRESH OIL IN THIS BOX!! Steve

Thanks for the info!
Here's what I did.
First I checked the limit switches according to the book. I found this pretty confusing. They appeared correct, so I left them alone. The motor has plenty of power. But, it is really hard to find neutral. The slightest blip of the switch send the transmission into forward or reverse. I'm sure this is a symptom of something!
I set the clutches by the little decal on the transmission first. That made everything worse. So I set the reverse clutch so it didn't slip. Then I set the forward clutch. Then I checked it again. This solved my problem for a couple hours then it slipped again.

Hi, one of the neighbors had an IH 750? forage harvester with electric controls and had all sorts of intermittented problems. Eventually the problems were solved by running a separate ground cable between tractor and forage harvester. Apparently the IH 750 relied on the hitch as providing ground from the tractor.

good luck
JB

Checking the ground is a good idea! I went through that with my old 718 when I decided I could build my own electric controls. I did check out the electrics pretty close. But I'm going to check it again.
