Does anyone have an easy way to remove the gear assembly for the knot mechanism on a 14T? I spent most of today trying to remove mine. I have the shaft and gear from the PTO removed, but the shaft from the PTO side accross the back to the gear on the opposite side for the spring tooth feed pick up assembly is a real bear. Any suggestions?

Well, I finally got the @#$%^&* thing apart. Had to drive the shaft which runs thru the knotter assembly left, then right, then left, etc. to get the keyways exposed to get the square keys out of the shaft to allow the shaft to be driven far enough to get the knotters and gears out. Now I just have to get the new parts on and re-time the whole thing.

Ron, a few things to look for #1 is the replacement frame from the same series of 14T ? the trip dog and bale lenght linkage changed later in the series. sooo measure the distance inside the frame where the shaft you took was there can a 1/4'of an inch difference between the two frames.
which might mean you can't use the old shaft it's fun to get all the knotter stuff and shims in place then find out the needle lift arm won't mount properly. anyway best wishes.

Right on. I misunderstood what gears you were taking apart. They're called the intermittent knotter gears. Just a suggestion - use some anti-seize compound when you put it back together so it won't be such a bear if there's a next time. Good luck with it.

If you use this baler much, there will be a next time. But it is still a good, low cost baler for small farmers.

I'm not quite sure which gear(s) you're referring to. If it's the pair of bevelled gears underneath a rounded shield, there's a roll pin thru the hub. I assume you're aware that these are the timing gears with marks on them that must be re-timed if removed and the entire baler will need to be re-timed. The knotter is driven by a gear and chain connected to the the clutch ring assembly. The knotter drive gear also has a roll pin thru it. I'm curious-why are you taking this apart? Did something break?

Rob,
the knotter frame used to list for $700.00 no longer available new at any price.
first thing to do is clean everything up real good since you have the shield off like Ron said the bevel gears are held on the shaft by pin and cotter pin. looking at the twine box pull the pin in the gear on that side of the frame, remove the auger drive chain shield and the pin(bolt and nut)on the auger shaft and pull the whole thing out from the baler this will let the gear(and shims)drop off the shaft(the gear has an arrow on it for timing)next is the feeder drive its gear has two holes in it to get at the countersunk bolts I used a brake spoon kindof "S' shaped as a screwdriver to hold and a 3/4"wrench on the nuts. Watch out for your fingers use a 2x4 cut to fit to hold the feeder arm up.now for the easy part remove the cotter pin on the chain drive gear at the front above the PTO shaft then the pin that holds the feeder drive gear on the same shaft its in front of the knotter assy. depending on how rusty the shaft is slide it to the front to clear the knotter frame, remove the needle lift arm or disc and remove the 2 bolts the hold the knotters to the frame, the frame is held down by 4 3/4' bolts back to the frame that supports the auger drive it has 3 bolts remove them next remove the bale length arm linkage.with knotters in its heavy but what you have to do is swing it up from the flywheel side to clear the bale chamber frame and slide it back off the feeder shaft.
this is probably confusing but clean it all up and have paper and pencil ready to draw locations and placements perhaps you can find someone close to help. Tom N.E.Ga.

Rob- both of the support brackets for the gear drive are cracked completely thru. I have a junk baler that still has a good knotter assembly that I need to chage over.

Interesting - I wonder what caused it to crack. Maybe too much torque from the knotter drive and/or the auger. I went out and looked at my parts machine (thank Heavens for it -a neighbor gave it to me to get it out of his yard). It uses a drilled pin with a cotter pin on all three gears - I was going my the parts book. I never noticed it before but the roller chain that drives the packing fingers crank and everything else your working on with this machine still has green paint on it! I bet JD would want a lot of bucks for that knotter frame. The part # is:- AM 3299 E (after serial # 58 334) if your curious to check it out. It's got to be several hundred dollars I'm sure. Good luck changing it out.
