Cannot get either one of the clutches to work on FB drill. Just bought it, it went up and down a couple of times now will not go up. Russ

I'm guessing they're seized due to lack of use. Try cleaning them with diesel fuel or solvent and lube everything well. Make sure you pull the trip levers all the way forward. Try one at a time and watch closely to see what they're (not) doing. Check to see if the clutch plate (single notch on the outside edge) rotates. Hope this helps.

Check the springs, there is a good chance that one of them broke.

Are the springs inside the housing? Going to try and take one apart. The dogs have no spring tension on either side, and although the sides are independent neither will lift. Well lubed and clean. Disconnected the connecting rods and manually lifted with the help of a 4 foot pipe. I thought I did good to free up 15 frozen fertilizer bushings. Russ

I went out and checked my drill (different model but same lift). You should be able to see the spring by looking down at the clutch (next to the notch in the clutch plate) between the clutch plate and the clutch sprocket (driven by a flat chain from the jackshaft). The spring's JD Part # is: S 143 M (15 x 2", 27 coils). The dog trip won't work if they're broken, missing, whatever. There should also be return springs at the base of the long trip handles that operate the clutch. These need to be in enough tension or the clutch will trip on its' own and cause skipping while seeding. Good luck with it.

I see the springs inside the clutch and they are both broken on the bottom end. The handle return springs are plenty strong. Thanks so much both of you guys for your help. Russ
