Pitman Arm wood type?

I have a Case model 10 sickle mower and my local Case/IH dealer says the arm is back ordered and is trying to locate one for a spare. I have a pretty good one on the mower and thought I would just make one. What kind of wood would you use, Oak, Hickory, Hard Maple ??? Thanks Kent

Kent,

The factory I order pitmans from uses Hickory and Hard Maple to make their pitmans. I'm not sure but I think they use WD40 to seal them when they are done making them.

I thought I would make it out of some oak scraps that a buddy has in his wood shop and then soak it in a bucket of waste oil. Please don't turn me in to the EPA !! Thanks for the suggestions. Kent

Oak should work fine, Hickory would probably be better though if you have it. If you want to stay clear of the EPA use boiled linseed oil on it.

Red oak is mainly for indoor furniture because it rots quick. If you have white oak, use that. White oak will last a lot longer with or without the oil.

I made a pair out of a broken pallet, I think they use white oak to build them. The wood they use in GOOD pallets is extremely tough and durable (plus it was free from work).

I made several at a time - made them out of the green treated deck lumber - had it outside and been on the first one now for a couple of years - looks as good as new...
