I have purchased a IH sicle mower,belt driven.No manuel and cannot locate a model #.Should I apply a lubricant to the cutting bar? Do I disasemble it? Thanks Ahead.

I have and use a IH Sickle mower and I do apply some (new) engine oil to my cutter bar before I start cutting each day (maybe twice, if it is a long day)! It quiets it down and I believe that it helps a little by preventing rust from all the moisture that it runs in.... (just my opinion) I also grease all the joints about every 4 hours worth of mowing too!

I do not use "used" engine oil however.... because used engine oil will pickup acids and blow-by chemicals from usage, that may cause corrosion on parts! And, the heat and chemicals of the engine may also breakdown the viscosity factors in the used oil.

As per model... you didn't provide enough details. Mine is a Model 100. It is a small mower, but does the job nicely.

Chris,
sounds like you have a #25 or #27 mower. does it have a small trailing wheel and does the front of it bolt to the draw bar? I have manuals for both actually there's little difference in either one.

THANKS A LOT FOR THE POST.I JUST FINISHED GIVING IT A TRY ON THE TRACTOR .IT SEEMS TO JAM UP AT LOW RPM,S. THE GRASS IS BAHAI AND IS DIFFICULT TO CUT.THE MOWER IS PTO DRIVEN AND HAS 2 GEAR BOXES CONNECTED BY A HEAVY BELT.CAN I TRY A FASTER RPM?

Lawrence, we used to run a IH balence head 100, and it would clog at the outboard side of the mower, and we were cutting bahia. We always ran at rated speed, WAO, 540 rpm.However, for some reason the bahia would clog only at the end of the sickle. Never had that problem when cutting coastal burmuda.

I have Massey 41 sickle mower and it would also clog on the outer shoe. I bought a universal end sickle at TSC and it never clogs now. The end sickle looks like 1-1/2 sickles.
