NH 270 grease fitting

Why is there a grease fitting on the front gearbox on these balers? I thought the gear oil ran all the way to the front of the gearbox, but there is a grease fitting on the front cover next to the flywheel. The front seal was bad on mine, and gear oil leaked out, so why the grease fitting?

The static level of gearlube in the box is well below the input shaft bearings. Apparently NH engineers don't trust the gears to splash oil to the front bearing. Therefore they want you to grease it when you grease the flywheel bushing just ahead of it. Better safe than sorry.

My 270 does not have a grease fitting anywhere to grease the flywheel bushing. Should there be one there that I'm not seeing?

Any NH balers I have worked on have a zerk on the back side of the flywheel that lubes the gearbox input shaft bushing/flywheel center bore. 270 may be different. This keeps the flywheel from rusting to the shaft, lessening or eliminating the main shearbolt protection.

Thanks for the info Rick. I looked my flywheel over and I can't find one or a place where one used to be. I'll have to do some checking and see if mine should have one. Seems like it should. Thanks and have a good one.
