The last guys who had my round baler let a bearing that was stuck spin on the shaft too long - now it has a tapered end - and a replacement bearing is sloppy where it is supposed to mount - so they just slid it in further - what is a possible easy fix?

I work at a small shop that does a lot of custom jobs like this. Welding it up works great, and I've done this for my uncles round baler. He had 7-9 rollers that were worn, only 2 or 3 that were good. If you look for just a small machine shop, chances are they will have it by the end of the week if their not too busy. Some may even do it right away. Most machine shops that do any custom work for 1 or 2 pieces should have a separate machine just for that purpose, as we do.

CrisL You may laugh at this but it sure worked. A friend had bought a used garden tractor with a under belly mower. On the mower the shaft that the belts were hooked to, the bearings were seized and rusted on. He took a cutting tourch and cut the bearings of, doing so he he got to close to the shaft and cut some of the shaft wall. He then proceded to clean up the shaft with a file. Knowing that the shaft had to be round and of a certain diamiter he applied JB Weld on the shaft where needed and then stuck it in the oven at 200 F for 15 minutes to speed up the curring time. Well he forgot about the shaft untill 2 hours later. A new file would not touch the JB Weld, thats when he brough the shaft over to me to turn on my lath. It turned just fine and has been in opperation for over 15 years on a acerage.

If there is one thing I've had to learn after farming for a dozen years is that there's alway's a cheaper way. You could have the shaft welded up, like the previous poster suggested, or you could turn or grind it down and sleeve it. If you're gonna play with farm equipment, the best investment you'll ever make is in a welder and taking the time to learn to use it.

Chris, A machine shop can probably weld up the shaft and then turn it back to size so the bearing can fit where it's supposed to. The trouble might be finding one willing to do so as most shops don't want to interupt production to fix a single piece. Where are you located? I have a small shop here in central Pa. Contact me by e-mail if you want to know more.

This is not what you are looking for, but one of my baler rollers broke, the factory replacement was $450 + shipping, local machine shop built a whole new one for $155.

My shaft broke as the previous owner had welded on it. They take a lot of pressure, not sure you will find a good long-term fix.
