I was thinking of building a round bale trailer to haul 4 large bales at a time. Any suggestions and plans would be of great help. Suggestions for the running gear??? Thanks

I'm just getting started with round bales. We sell all of our hay and straw. The best market is still with square bales. I am building a way to transport round bales, based on the same idea we use for square ones. I bought an old school bus, and cut the body off of the back, right up to the drivers seat. The I took the back of the body, and made a back to the drivers compartment. That leaves a long wheelbase chassis, on which I built a "bed" simular to a round bale trailer. It allows me to haul quite a load of square bales, and when the "new version" is done, it will carry 8 to 10 round bales. The limiting factor will be the wieght. This free's up the tractors for more important work.

The paper magazine 'Farm Show' has had numerous such over the years. They have a web page, and offer reprints or a CD of a decade of articles. They don't really have 'plans', but the picture is often enough to get the idea.

There are many plans that are self-unloading, so you can dump at home & don't need 2 loaders, one to load, one to unload.

There also are deals that will pick up & unload bales by backing over the bale(s) and raising the wheels (kind of a cross between a 3-point bale fork & a hyd hog carrier...). These operate at tractor speeds at best, but no extra loader needed at either end, can handle 3-4 bales depending on size.

So, what features do you want, how far are you traveling, etc.?

I have an old house trailer frame and running gear that I'm contemplating converting to a bale hauler. Not something I'd use on public roads, just for moving bales from field to barn.

Couple of variables to consider. Width of bale will have an effect and what you plan to put the bales on the trailer with. I built a bumber hitch trailer on a single I beam for 8 rolls. Used 1 axle. Didnt like it much. Now that I have a loader tractor on each farm I just use a flat wagon. Can haul 8 4x5 rolls (3 long, 2 wide, and 2 cap centered on top). Use 6 lug gear with a 20' oak flat. Same wagons that we rick square bales on or haul tobacco to the barn.
