Great site. I need some help with what to use for a jack and stand for my NH 55 rake? I don't have any jack on it now and it was just siting on the ground at the dealers. What do most of you use? Thanks Jeff

My preference is to put a dolly wheel on. Once you use one you'll never go back. I did mine for $120.

There are several advantages to the dolly wheels. First and foremost I have never seen any disadvantage. I started 20 years ago with regular rakes w/o them. We used to do a lot of custom work, biggest problem we had with rakes was metal fatigue in the arch of the hitch. Short turns and a hitch bouncing on the tractor drawbar puts a lot of stress cracks in the at the arch and in the blot holes on the hitch itself. Never seen a dolly wheel 'run any hay down'.

Advantages:

Rakes cleaner. The rake follows the contour of the ground better as the basket remains more level. (It the front end of the tractor drops a few inches the draw bar may go up several.

Shorter turning. Dont have to worry about a tire hitting the main frame.

Easier hook up. With the dolly wheel and rake out of gear, one man can roll it almost anywhere. They are a beast to have to try to hook up with out the jack.

Jacks live a hardlife. Lots of tire abuse and metal fatigue. Trust me, if you ever use one, you'll love it. I bought a 256 NH 6 years ago. It was our first one with a dolly wheel. We have another 256 and 2- 56's. I retrofitted all of them that next winter.

I think the dolly wheel runs down some hay into the ground, no one wants that around here.

Say, my 55 rake has the factory stand on it. but what us the odd bracket sticking out behind the hitch? Just a vertical plate with a bit of a pipe hole in it.

Mine was gone when I got it as well. I just bought a weld on one that is the pipe with the 4 holes. It works great and you never have a problem being able to get it to the right height.

Paul, That bracket was for a hydraulic lift kit that was an option. There was an arm that attached through the two holes in the frame up near the cross bracket and it hooked to the basket arms via cable. I have been looking for one of those brackets for ages so I could copy it. The cylinder hooked to the bracket you are referring to. I have a picture of one I could scan if you want....

My rake has the factory stand but I suppose you could rig something up with an old bumper jack. O make a swivel stand that you just drop it down and back up to park the rake . New Holland use to have them if they still don't and are pretty simple.
