How do you know when a Knotter is wore out???

I have been looking at a Ford baler off and on for several months now (the dealer sells it and the customer returns it!). Evidently the baler will tie on one side, but not the other. At one point, it would not tie on either side. It is a Ford baler, model 520. I like it becuase it seems to be otherwise in pretty good shape, is small in size and makes a slightly smaller bale - when it ties!

The dealer (who only sells used stuff) says one of the knotters is wore out. My questin is - when do you know a knotter is wore out on any baler, be it Ford, NH or JD (as they use similar knotters)? I read posts about replacing knotter parts, but not much about replacing the entire knotter.

I am gussing that the knotter is OK and what the problem is - is the folks tinkering with this baler do not have any manuals and therein lies the problem. Worse case, how much can one expect to pay for a knotter assy for one side of a Ford baler?

Firstly, thanks for all the replies!

I spoke to the dealer and he assured me that a complete new knotter assy could be had for about $125 for this baler, even though the New Holland dealer said they are no longer available. In addition, this guy wants $600 for this broken baler less new knotters!

I have priced several balers from several dealers and have come to the conclusion that if one wants a reasonable price on an old baler - buy from an individual!

I agree with the other posts. My experience is that these machines and how they "really" work is a mystery to most that own or try to fix them. At one time I had the JD Dealer's "specialist" out to figure out a tying problem-he couldn't! I took on the challenge and now have a reasonable understanding of how they work and what's wrong when they don't. I've spent a lot of time reading manuals, tinkering and asking others for help. If you can buy it cheap, it's most likely fixable and worthwhile. I'd look for wrongly installed/repaired parts like the needles, wiper arms, tucker fingers, etc. I've seen parts brazed, welded, epoxied-you name it! It never ceases to amaze me how some guys try to save $, modify or otherwise screw-up these fascinating machines.

I wonder if it is simply a worn out knotter , and providing the knotters are easy to come buy why the dealer would not replace it put it in working condition sell it for a little more. I would think one satisfied customer would be worth more than selling and taking it back again. It may be a goog baler but that is question I would have. As far as the knotter goes I would look for obvious signs of wear something bent flat spots on roller worn grooves any excessive play try standing on one side of the baler and see if any end play in the knotter.

Bill,

I would bet that you are correct but I would check with a NH dealer to get the availability and cost of a new knotter. If the baler is in as good a shape as you describe then the odds are it is not worn out. If I remember right the 520 is the same as the 150 that they built for years so there may be more parts available than one would think. I am not at home right now with the reference material so I can't confirm this. Will check tomorrow. If Errin OH reads he can contribute more about the wearability as I think the knotters were the same on his 250. Most of the wear items were made to be replaced and I imagine parts will be available. Offer him a $100 and see if you can help him out with "junking" it for him

I checked with the New Holland dealer this afternoon and he said the knotters are no longer available.

As a complete assembly that may be correct but I have not had any problems getting individual parts such as wear items for a 530 which is the same vintage. I would still throw the dice if the baler is in as good a shape as you describe. If nothing else it will be a good learning experience.
