Massey 120 baler

I have a really annoying problem with my Massey 120 baler. I took it out of retirement this summer when the old Holland wore out and its been a disaster. Makes "banana bales" that are next to impossible to build a stack with. There seems to be insufficient hay packed into the upper half of the bale leaving a bale that it is curled up at each end. When I pick the bale it up it often folds into a round bale. I have cranked it down to max tension but still can't get a real tight bale. Driving faster or slower does not seem to make a noticeable difference. The 120 appears to be similar to the 124 according to the manual. This baler has not done a lot of work so I don't think anything should be worn out on it. Right now I'm looking for ideas , adjustments, additions, something. Otherwise it will be for sale cheap.

Things to check for: Packing fingers in time / L.H. packing fingers throw out of adjustment (most likely cause) Hay dogs engaging (if fitted) Bale retarders or Hay wedges installed in bale chute Heavy enough swath to charge baler properly Correct rpm (pto speed)

One or more of the above is likely the problem. Good luck with it.

p.s. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest a JD 12, 14 or 124! (My preference for a baler. I've got a MF 12 rusting in the yard waiting for my JD to quit.)

Thanks Rob. I'll check those things. I suspect the hay wedges, (it doesn't have any at all). Maybe I can take some off the old New Holland and use them.
