I didn't have any grain this year and am in a position to buy straw. A neighbour has 20 acres of wheat that he is going to shred and drop for me, I'll go in with the baler and bale up what I want, probably around 700 small squares. What should the expectation be as to price? I was thinking 60 -70 cents per bale... is this in range or am I off target ?I'd like to hear your comments on market price of u-bale straw..... 25-40 dollars a ton is what we do in our area. Anything under 25 might as well chop back into the field for fert. and organic matter.

I agree, if its going into bales I don't know why you would chop it.

Again, around here, folks prefer it being chopped.

When my uncle dropped it out the combine without chopping, the neighbor raked once, ran a stalk chopper over it, and raked it.

My neighbor wants it chopped now that he got a newer round baler, asked me to leave the chopper on the combine.

Small squares are woth an extra nickel at least if it's chopped straw.

It makes better bedding if the straw is shorter.

Figure land lord's share of 'less desirable' crops goes is about a third here. Good clean straw worth $3.75 a bale. A third of $3.75 is a $1.25. As you are taking it all and he doesn't have to load or unload his part I call it an even dollar. Using this model you can account for what ever straw wholesales for in your area. For about the last 10 years most folks here have just cut for straw, not even run the combine.

It's all over the board, really. Few years ago I've sold it for 55 cents a bale here in southern MN. Out of the barn they go for $1.10 - 2 a bale, for reference.

I hear of higher prices other places, so I'd think you are in the ballpark.

Not much of a neighbor, Id say. Wait, I forgot, its 2003 not 1953. Ive seen several times when the owner would give it away to get it off the field. Made for easier plowing. Seems like that would be more the case today as with no plowing it would seem to be harder to get most of it covered, but what do I know. Id say 50 to 75 cents would be plenty and then some

I sell it to my neighbor now for $13.50 a round bale, that's pretty cheap. When I was selling it for $.55 a square bale, I had 7 guys call for it, one called back a second time just to make sure. It's a common practice here.
