Had the neighbor combine my oats last week. He cut them high, leaving some lengthy stems. In order to get this stuff off of the alfalfa plants, is it acceptable to cut this stuff down with a Woods rotary mower, then rake and bale the straw???.....or will the rotary mower shred the stalks too much to make good straw bales. I am really kinda desparate, neighbor's haybine is broke and, due to weather conditions, want to get the straw off the field. Any advise is welcome. Thanks.

I run the straw through the combine chopper than let it weather some & use a rotary mower to cut it, done it for years!!! Everyone wants clean bright straw, but if your going to bed with it straw that has been let weather will soak up allot more

A) You can mow straw with a rottary mower, but you will not be able to bail it. It will shred the stalks. Your best bet is to haybine it or cut it with a rotory or sickle mower of some kind.

B) If you decide to use the rotory mower, cut it short and go slow. Mulch it in, then with a little rain and a little luck your alfalpha might emphasis on might come through

I have baled straw cut with a 6' (one rotor) Bush Hog. It has to be a brush cutter, not a finish-type grass mower. Keep the front down and the back up, make sure the blade is sharp, and run with a higher ground speed than if you were cutting grass or brush. It might not make the cleanest cut, but it can be done.

I've done it the same way you did, and i have a 6' Woods Rotary Cutter.

Not a perfect way to do it, but it does work pretty good.

If there's a lot of straw on the ground now, i'd rake it aside, and cut in between the raked straw so as not to chop up what's on the ground now.
