Old Farm Wagons

I am interested in the historical aspects of old farm wagons, especially the ones which have been modified or built from automobile parts. A few months ago i posted a few remarks about them and have written a research paper on them. A few days ago i was in an old barn and found a real nice one to photograph. It is an ordinary farm wagon with the axles cut off and axles from old model, perhaps model A or early V8 ,Ford axles put into place. it was fitted with 5.5 x17 tires. This wagon has been in the same barn since 1958 and appears to be in good condition except that the tires have rotted off. I would like to have photos of other home made or modified wagons for a historical album. I recall when most every farm had such a wagon and now there are few left.

I am currently using a kicker wagon that is built on a 1930's Dodge running gear. I rebuilt the deck two years ago, and plan on using it until it fall completely apart. I also have several two wheeled trailers built from various old cars and trucks.

moonlight, i just happened to think. here in nebraska homemade wagons are alive and well. ranchers make wagons out of old trucks to haul hay stacks. I know one guy just made a wagon out of a tandem axel truck. he hauls 15 large round bales.

We had one which had Chrysler Airflow axles under it. It would have been much better to have kept it as a car.

I would be interested in reading your research paper as I am also interested in wagons. I have a 1917 Conklin wagon that my great-grandfather had on the farm, it had the wheels cut off and rubber tires mounted, the bed was in-tact with no rot and slight traces of the original stencil designs. I had the wheels re-built at an Amish buggy shop and I reproduced stencils and painted it. It makes a real show-piece at the local fair.

Moonlight, older wagons were often made from Ford axles, the front axle of a 1935 Ford was a favourite because of a strong cross member and the spindles were easily welded to form the rear axle, while a good blacksmith could rig up the front for steering. I still have a wagon on a '35 Ford axle but the wheels have been upgraded to 15 inch. Interestingly my uncle had a wagon on '35 Ford axles as well made by the same blacksmith in Hensall Ontario, but it is long gone. Mike in Exeter Ontario

i know where there is an old wooden wagon with the spokes cut off and rims and tires put on. a very nice conversion but the wagon sets outside and dies of neglect. I talked to the owner about it but he don't seem to care.

I don't know if this is what your interested in but my Grandpa gave me his old Springfield wagon when I was a little boy. It has set in my dads barn for close to fifty years. It has the original paint and is in very good shape. My dad who is 74 years old use to ride in it to town. 17 miles one way. He always says it had the prettiest chuckle to it going down the road. It has had the floor replaced several times, other than that it is original. Afew years ago we hooked the "B" Farmall to it pulled it out in the field and had our family pictures in it.
