I just changed the bearings on one end of the bar the teeth are bolted to. How do I get enough slack to allow the bolt that goes through the bearings to line up with the hole in the end wheel? There must be a little trick that I am missing without taking the whole rake apart.

KJT, I could pnly chuckle when I read your question. They are a bugger to say the least. There is no trick or special tools. Loosen ALL ten bar bearings as well as both star wheels so you have as much play in the reel as possible. I have made myself a curved prybar that I put through the starwheel hole into the end of the bearing bolt and I then pry the bolt inot place. When this doesn't work, cussing is permitted. (just kidding) Whatever way you do it is ok, because there is no set way. Newer bars have the bolt clean through so all you have to do is pull the bolt and then reinstall it. Steve

I just checked in the 258 rake book. In order to get enough clearence to remove or install a bar you must loosen the mounting bolts on the spindle assembly on the right side ( the end opesite the gear box). Loosen the bearing stud at each end of the tine bar next to the bar that is to be removed. I have also found that it helps if you loosen the bolts in the spider at the hub.
Hope this helps.

A couple of tricks, dealer said to loosen the other bars on the 'wheel' to get enoguh slack. Local guy told me to use a big clamp and pull the 'wheel' back unitl the shank would go through. That's the only way I have actually done it. Takes a big clamp, lots of umph, and be careful. I have broken more than one of those made in China clamps doing this.
