I need to ask a stupid question. I have been reading back through the old posts and seen the term used quite often. Exactly what are the "hay dogs"?

Hay dogs in my Ford 542, bottom dogs (3) are easily seen protruding up through the bottom of the bale chute just before the compression face of the plunger. The top (2 spring loaded, 1 stationary) are directly above, but do not show as well:

Links to images showing the top hay dogs on my NH273. One image shows (red outlines)the top hay dogs from the out side. The other shows the top dogs doing what they are supposed to do. Don't have an image referencing the bottom hay dogs, but they are directly below the tops. On the 273, there are 3 spring loaded on top & 2 spring loaded on bottom with 1 small stationary (small wedge welded to the floor of the bale chamber) for the 3rd.

Thanks a ton Garry! I've looked everywhere for a picture showing these. All 4 on my NH 270 are stuck and the springs are broke on 2 of them. Guess it's from previous owner leaving hay in the chamber during storage. Another trip to the good ole NH dealer I guess.

My hay dogs are a beagle and a fiest. Whenevr I cut the field behind the house, they follow me looking for rabbits!

Hay dogs are like little levers that are usually spring loaded. The protrude into the bale chamber of a baler. Their purpose is to prevent the hay from springing back when the plunger pushes the hay into the chamber. When one is missing or the spring is broken you will usually have tying problems, maybe not every bale, but on every second or third bale. The problem is most apparent on dry stiff hay and not as bad on damper hay. On a MF baler if I'm having knotter problems, first I check the springs on the knotter and the ones on the path from the twine box, then the hay dogs.

Basicly they are spring loaded wedge. Hay is pushed past them as the plunger compress's and cuts. When the plunger returns and the next batch is fed in they hold the compress hay back to prevent the hay from following the plunger back up and blocking the feed chamber. They also help keep the bale square. On my old ford there are two on top and three on bottom. If you loose a spring (say on bottom) you'll get odd shaped bales and have pluging problems.

Are they spring loaded on NH balers? All I see in my bale chamber on my 270 are 4 wedges, but they look like they are just bolted to the sides of the chamber. I don't see any springs. I need to replace 2 of the 4 as they are rusted apart in the middle.

I would think a 270 would have them , older NH's do ..Look behind the knotters and on the bottom of the chute

Ridr, I took a walk out to have a look at my 270. You're right, it has 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. All 4 are horizontal right now. What makes them protrude into the chamber to hold the hay from backing up? Are they suppose to be sticking into the chamber all the time? I'm trying to learn all I can as this is the first baler I have owned. Always borrowed before. I ordered a manual, but its backordered and I'll probably have to bale second cutting before I get it.
