I just purchased what the seller claimed was a 1950 ford 8N tractor. After paying him I went to get the serial number from the engine. It turned out the number was 9N228206 which led me to think it was a 9N. I am new to Fords and didn't know the difference and neither did the seller. I checcked this forum serial numbers and it appears, if I read it right, that it is a 1946 model 2N. I paid $1000. The engine is quiet and runs good but smokes more than I would like. The pto, 3 point and hydraulics work good and quiet. There is some rust thru on the hood and missing original grill. Tires are like new. Of course it needs a lot of tlc to make it more presentable. I live on long island, NY but have 70 acres of land and mobile home in Herkimer upstate NY. What do you folks think of the price? Is it OK or did I mess up? I have owned a Farmall CUB for a couple of years and found it to be too weak for cutting heavy weeds and brush. If this machine works out better I may be selling the Cub and several implements. By the way this is just the beguinning. I will be asking a lot of questions once I get it home and start tinkering with it.

$1000 is VERY good for a working N-tractor; $2000 would be cheap for what you describe. 9/2N's are nearly identical: 3-speed gearbox, flat rear wheels. 8N's have 4-speeds and bowl-shaped rear wheels.

You'll find the N's are a lot more versitile than the Cub, more power too, easy to repair, easy to get parts. Good luck!

That's the same vintage of 2N that I have. It will do lots of work.

On the other hand, it's possible that the engine is 2N while the rest is 8N. Does it have a 3-speed (2N) or a 4-speed (8N) transmission?

Bigwheele, Congrats on your new purchase. The price is fair if both parties are satisfied. It appears that you paid a very fair price. If it should require some mechanical and cosmetic repair you have room to invest and still get a return on your time and $$$$. The guys on the Ford 9N,2N,8N discussion board are very helpful and specfic to your particular tractor, as you can see here most any discussion group will point you in the right direction. My first recommendations would be to purchase a set of manuals, while waiting for them to arrive search out the rest of this site, check out the archives dig into the "research and info "section. Have fun and enjoy. ATW/WA

You will get many responses if you post on the Ford N board.

I tried many times posting on the 'N' board but I keep getting the message back "sorry your message could not be added". I sent an e-mail to those who operate the forum to request help. The next day they told me to try it again. I figured they may have fixed it for me. I tried over and over and it just doesn't work for me. Can't understand why. I'll e-mail them again with my frustration. You know what I just noticeD? At the bottom of this posting it says "Submit follow up" whereas under the 'n' board it says I believe "post message"

Good luck with the tractor. :) I mighta looked for a machine with live pto, but those N tractors sure are popular. Doesn't matter what I think of the price, what do _you_ think of the price? :) Actually, I think you got a fair deal, most of those N tractors are way over-priced for their capibilities. Sounds like you got a working machine for lower $$$$ than average.

You might get a whole ton of replies if you go to the N forum here on this site. You are in the machinery section, which deals more with mowers, balers, wagons & the like.
