Is there much difference between a 55, 56, and 256 rake? Neighbor has a 55 in very good condition, all bearings tight and good, for sale for $750. Is that a fair price?

I bidded up a 56 last spring quitting at $850. Have sean them priced up to $1200. I would say it is priced at the current market price. Its N.H. so it is going to hold its value better than most brands. Parts are easy to get and dealer network in our area is excellent. I don't think you are going to find many at a bargain price but this sounds like a good value. Price plus Quality.

I paid $450 for my 55 from the original owner 4 years ago. Best money I ever spent. The dealer in town had a 55 for $750 and a 56 for $1100 at the time. You won't regret it if it is in good shape.

Around Braham, MN there are quite a few small hobby farmers. I paid $600 + a trade for my 55 and was happy to get it. He also had a 56 but wanted $1,000 for it so went with the 55.
I saw a 256 go at auction for $750 and was broke.
I am very happy with my 55. The best $600 I have spent yet, alot better than the $275 Minnesota side rake I had.

John;In Michigan a 55 will only bring 200 dollars 700 dollars will buy a 256

I believe the main difference between the 55 and
the newer 56 and 256 is the placement of the wheels. The 55 has a straight type axle where the
other axles are staggered to follow the contour
of the land better thus clearer pick up. If your
land is good and flat and you are pleased with the rake go for it. Price seems a little high, but
if it's in good shape and you haven't got to spend
time looking around it may be worth it.

Is the 256 a pto drive and the 55/56 are ground drives? Where does the 259 and 260 line fit in here? I know they're right and left delivery but what else is different? Saw a set with double hitch last weekend for $3500.

lpc, the 55 is ground driven and straight rear axle. The 56 and 256 are also ground driven and offset rear axle. The 258 and 259 are the same as the 256, but are 1 foot wider at 9 and 1/2'. The 259 was originaly 155 tooth rake while the 258 was only 100 teeth. Then New Holland dropped the 259 and made the 258 optional 155 teeth. They come from the factory with 100, but the holes are in the bars for 55 more. The 260 is also ground driven, but delivers the opposite side. All these rakes are ground driven. Steve

That's the difference, wheel stagger.

Locally a 55 goes for $350 - 600, mostly around $500. A 56 will go about $750, and a 256 will go around $1000. All things are variable at auctions of course, & depends on in season or not.....

the 55 are old, the 56 is better makes nice corners and follows the ground.
A 56 with dolly wheel will bring as much as $1400.
