I work for the neighbor and he has about 10 acres he wants to fertilize next spring.I was wondering when the best time to spread lime is and how much to apply per acre. thanks.

Lime's effect is like manure. It happens but over time.I usally spread or have spread 2tons an acre in the fall Sept on.This gives it a chance to start working and next year itll take hold.If you need to put more on do it again in the spring though given the rush of work and wet fields it might be summer. As staed you can spread it any time.A little trick we do is to throw a bag or two on top of the spreader this way you your getting two birds with one stone and your always adding a little something plus sweetening the manure.Of course we have clayy acid soil in New England.

I agree with everything that has been said, but slightly O.T. I thought you might like to hear a very old English saying about the perils of constantly using lime, but not using any 'manure' ( read that as fertilizer ) :-

"Lime, lime, but no manure, May make the father rich, but the son will be poor".

Everything else you can add fertilizer to match however many tons of hay you remove. A soil test is better, but guessing is possible....

Lime is ANYBODYS guess, there is no way to tell you. Where I live, we use none. Some folks with run down land in other regions need 5 tons or more, repeated often.

Soil test is the _only_ way to figure out lime rates, if any! No one can tell you an honest answer.

Soil test.

Do a soil test to determine your PH level, then
lime according to test recommendations. I usually
try and do 2 ton/acre. It takes at least 6 months
for the lime to work in, faster if you lightly
disc it in. Your looking to put the PH in the 6
to 7 range that way the fertilizer you apply will
be used at it's highest rate. Keep in mind that
chemical fertilizer makes the soil more acid, so
if manure is available use it. It adds organic
materials as well. When using fertilizer, I like
to split the application to 50% in the spring and
50% after the first cutting to feed the second.

Lime, any time. As far as how much lime and fertilizer a soil test is the best money you can spend. Nitrogen rate will be constant but 1 ton of lime too much on 10 acres will pay for the soil test twice.

I usually fertilize from mid March to mid April, lime in the fall. Nitrogen to maximum recomended rate (100 # actual N=300# ammonium nitrate per acres). P/K and lime to soil test.

We definetly need some on those fields.Only getting 300 bales off 5 acres.I figure we could probably get some from a local feed mill or store like L.E. Sommers.
