Plunger on NH 67 baler

I'm trying to adjust my plunger on my new holland 67 baler. The knives are 1/2" apart at the top and 1/4" at the bottom. I have started to move them over but the plunger gets stuck. What is the best way to keep the plunger rails square when adjusting the knives? Or is there any other way to get the knives back in line? The manual is not a lot of help. Thanks Jeff

Jeff, place the plunger in the area that the adjusters are. Push the rail over till the plunger has basicly no side movement. Don't squeeze it too tight. Once the plunger is held over torwards the pickup, your plunger needs no more adjusting. At this point, shim the knives to get the desired amount of clearance, preferably as little as possible. These plungers are nasty to set up. I never learned to like them. When New Holland came out with the 270/271 style and carried thru the 268,273,276,etc., they really made knife and plunger maintainace a snap. Steve

Jeff, Welcome to the 67 question of the year !! I have a 67 and know two others all with that very problem. The best we have come up with so far is to shim the stationary knife so it is even with the plunger knife. Make sure you have the real thing to , the stationary knife should be a full 1/4 inch hardened steel , not 3/8 as seems popular to replace it with. This fall we will know more, when season is over it is complete tear down time...also , you will probably find just shimming the middle and top bolts is enough to bring her even and close...put a level to your plunger and see if it ain't straight , ours are , the gap seems to be on the stationary side. If anybody knows the right answer please tell us !!
