Baled 14 bales behind a side delivery rake then baled some for a neighbor behind his Vermeer R-23 V type rake. I'll have to admit, to me it's a breeze round baling behind those V rakes. Don't have to worry about getting the bale started so much with my picky JD 510. Just more or less, drive and wait for the bale chamber to fill up.
So, for you round bale type guys out there, what type of rakes to you bale behind?

Here is what we rake with, two roll a bar rakes. I have used the neighbors wheel rake once or twice and I hope I never do again, I will never own a wheel rake as long as the roll a bars keep running.

Don't need to rake. Widrows are almost too big to bale now. If hay was thin than I could see where it would save some time pulling 2 or 3 together. As far as wearing out a baler. Neighbor is still using a JD430 that bales 4-5000 bales a season. He said probly 50,000 bales in its life so far. Works like a charm. Preventive maintenance and stored indoors has a lot to do with a baler lasting.

i use an old Vicon. Also rake some with new holland roll o bar. But here in southwest nebraska i have to worry about the wind coming up and baling my hay for me. So alfalfa i seldom rake.

I know what you mean, just set the V rake at 5 foot wide, go straight with baler, and bales are uniform. Sure beats weaving back and fourth. And you can go as fast as you want to with those rakes.Would not want to follow every cutter width, sure would take more time and wear out the baler faster.

We use 2 model 23 and 1 model 23A V Rakes. The 23A works better in alfalfa because of the larger wheels. The V rake saves a lot of time on the baler and raking.

Have a neighbor who bales a lot for other people. Uses a John Deer haybine and John Deere baler. He never rakes and as best I can figure out the end product is as good as the ones that rake. He normally bales a 5x5 bale but can go as small as 3x5 to as large a 6x5. I ask him why de doesn't rake and his explantion was that is two more trips over the land with the tractor without good results.

He is also making 2 trips around the field with his big baler running (hint: wearing out) for every 1 trip around the field I make with my baler. I just make my additional trip with a low horsepower tractor and rake, which is much cheaper than a baler.

I use a pair of NH bar rakes, hooked together. Had a V-rake (for 3 days) and hated it. To get the windrow narrow enough for the pickup it would ball up on the rake.

Two NH rakes hooked together in a tandem V or a series are not even close to a Vermeer R23A twin rake. The NH setup is cumbersome and not engineered from the ground up. Vermeer also makes fully hydraulic adjustable model in 24' & 28'. These rakes will last a lifetime unlike the wheel rakes. The first R21 rakes are still going after 25 years.
