i have been considering purchasing a MF 1020 compact tractor, it is 17 hp and about 2000lbs, would this tractor have the power to ted hay in hilly land?

I have pulled a 4 basket sitrex with a 17 hp Kubota. I was in road gear on fairly flat land. A large clump of hay would really pull the tractor down. It rode like a rock. I was able to spread out a good size 4ft. windrow that had been raked. Would not recomend for much use though. It will put a lot of wear on your backside.

Hi, You can use it if you can run the tractor slow enough. Speed will depend on how green the grass, height and how wet it is. Green tall first cut is the hardest to tedder , the longer you wait after cutting the easier it is to tedder. Bill

You'd have enough power to swing a double rotor tedder (as stated above...about 10' swath), but the bumpy ride you'd take will probably give you second thoughts. You might want to consider something with larger tires for a better ride.

Good luck.

I don't know exactly. What size tedder?

I pulled a NH 55 side rake with my brother in law's 7100 Kubota - a small 4wd 15hp tractor. I guess it could be interesting on hills for a novice - weight, or lack of it, is a problem, but I'm very used to hills & machinery so I had no problem, pulled the rake fine.

I was really close to the dust & dirt; and such a short wheelbase makes for a bone-jarring ride - were my biggest complaints.
