NH haybine problem

The oil seal on the output (as opposed to the pto shaft) shaft on my NH 461 haybine has gone out. It's the seal right where the shaft enters the gear box. I can't figure out how to get the shaft out so I can replace the seal. It looks to me like after I have the cotter pin and nut on the end of the shaft in the gear box off, and once I've detached from the frame the bearing housing on the opposite end of the shaft, I should be able to slide the shaft out of the gear in the gear box, from the chain sprockets and pulley on the shaft, and through the part of the frame that that's near the other end of the shaft. But no, although everything that's on the shaft that appears loose enough to slide off the shaft, I can't get the shaft to move more than about half an inch, then it stops. Any ideas of what I might be overlooking or what my approach to this should be? Can't see anything in the parts book that makes it obvious what the problem is.

Thanks

Bob, the both gears in that box have keyways to drive them. That shaft is going nowhere untill the keyway is off of it. Steve

Thanks Steve. I have to confess, I can't see how to get the key out of there. Any suggestions?

Bob, if you look closely, although both gears and shafts look about the same inside the gearbox, there is a difference. I don't know which, but one of the gears is sitting on a straight keyway, and the other is sitting on a half moon keyway. Apparently, the one you want to remove is the one with the half moon. If this is correct, you will have to remove the other shaft(the one with the straight key) first so you have room to remove the gear that is on the shaft that you want out. I don't know if this is clear to you or not. Hard to explain. But the shaft with the straight key can be pulled out of the gearbox and the key will stay with the gear. Not so with the half moon key. The gear must come off first so you can pull the keyway. The ONLY way is to have the other gear out of the way. Steve

Thanks Steve. That's clear enough.
