My NH 273 baler makes a loud slamming noise when it is done tying. The knotters, etc. work fine, and bales are perfect. If you slow the tractor way down, it doesn't do it as bad, but that isn't always practical. Where should I start looking before I start spending money on it? Any ideas? Thank you.

My super 67 used to bang when it completed the tying cycle. It did this for a couple seasons only breakeing a shear pin or two when I first started baling each season. I didn't discover why it was doing it until I used an unmarked bolt for a shear pin and it didn't break, but the chain driving the knotters did. Check your needle timing and your plunger stop. If it's all mushroomed on the end you need to check those two adjustments. What you've described is what I had. The slower I ran my baler (behind a Farmall H vs my Oliver 1800) it didn't bang. Once hooked to my Oliver and running at the right RPM.. BANG!

Mikel, there are 2 or 3 possibilities and Kelly's is definately one of them. I suspect that you need either the safety latch adjusted or the timing readjusted one or 2 notches. However, there is another possibity. The next time it ties, watch and see if the needles come back and slam against the bottom of the bale chamber.(Actually, it would be the bottom press rail) If it is, the rod that pulls the needles up in needs to be shortened so the needles go up through the knotters farther, but does not throw them back quite as far. If this is the case though, changing the length of that rod will also change timing a little bit. The more I think of it, I suspect this is your probably your trouble. Steve

Check and make sure the little disc brake on the needle arm isn't worn out or loose and letting the arm drop down a little instead of staying all the way back after tying.

as well as checking to be sure the needle carriage is not hitting somewhere as already stated, & your timing is right --

check for excess slack in the chain that drives the knotters. If there is a lot of slack in the chain, & your chain cover/guard is in place - when the tension comes off the chain at the end of the tying cycle, the chain will 'slap' the top of the cover, the more slack - the harder & louder sounding it will be.

Make sure the needle carriage (bail) isn't hitting the tension rail under the bale chamber as it gets to home. Shorten the link from the crank on the knotter stack if it is.

Is it just the needles going to the home position?

My 1st thought would be the needle safety catch. Its the thing that blocks the plunger from hitting the needles. It might be right at the end of adjustment. Also if you knotters are right at the end of being in time. Mine did that for a wile till I re adjusted the safety catch. But then again I was beaking shear bolts one after the other too.
Just a thought.
