I suppose that the question you are asking is this? Is a flail type(Mott) mower better than a rotary(Woods) type mower? If this is the question you are asking, they are actually two very different mowers. The flail type mower which I use gives a much smoother cut than the rotary mower. I like the fact that my 60" Mott mower not only cuts the grass, it rolls the lawn some each time. I have used the Mott flail mowers for about 20 yrs now,. I am on my second one, when I sold the IH 154, the buyer wanted the mower too. So I had to find another one.I have modified mine in several ways that include front gauge wheels, front and rear grass curtains, longer hitch arms, floating top link hook up so that my mower simply floats behind the tractor(650 J.D. compact diesel)and follows the contour of the ground, don't have to lift it on most turns it will caster around behind. Another thing that I like about this mower is that it does not throw stuff like a rotary mower, it simply leaves them where they are. One terrible enemy of this mower is wire and rope and vines, they will choke it badly. I usually run my blades for about 2 years and then sharpen them and turn them around, am going to get 10 years out of the blades, , but they will be probably $150.00 to $175.00 to replace when they go. I mow a 2-1/2 acre yard with mine and then shred all the little trees or saplings that I push over with it. I found that I could mow at a higher speed (gear) with the flail mower, it seemed to take less h.p. to run. They mow best when the blade drum is turning at a 2,00-2200rpm drum speed. The flails need the high centrifugal force to give a good clean cut. Mott was bought out by Alamo Corp. and they mostly sell to government and municipalities. There is a place named Flail Master in Tennessee that has a lot of parts for the Mott and other flail mowers. The one thing I can say for the flail mower is that you either love them or hate them. They are DIFFERENT! Gene Davis
