Hello Everyone-I have a John Deere 6ft grain binder, and last night I had problems with my sickle bar. I had no problems with the sections last year, but this year I have already broke 4 sections and it looks like 3 more are about ready to go. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place I can get new sections and gaurds for this beast. My oats are still a just a little to green, so I have time to get them replaced. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!

Are sections getting loose before braking? Might need to tighten rivets that hold them on. Are hold down clips holding sections down on the guards? They can be bent down. Are guards level? They can be bent to straighten. Also might contact John Beiler in New Holland Pa. for parts. 717-656-9733. Let it ring, he is Amish and the phone is outside.

The sections are all good and tight, and the gaurds are wore but not bent. I think the whole thing is that the sections are just getting old and briddle. Thanks!

This is a good place to start.
BW Macknair & Son.
They are in Pennsylvania, and specialize in old machinery parts.

yup Macknairs is a god bet, but I can tell you youll get brittle before those sections do. Did you take the sickle out and sharpen the sections? They need to be sharpened every year with the bevel alont with regular mower sickles. I sharpen them by putting tyhem in a vise. I sharpen the beveled edge unti I cause a wire edge to turn over on the flat side on each section, then I turn the sickle aroud and run the file flat against the flat side of the sickle until there is no wire edge on either side. I fee;l for it with my fingernail. This will make cutting easier if you are using horses, and will eliminate the problems you describe
