How Much Twine Used in Round Baler?

I started using a Hesston 5540 round baler this year making 4' x 5' fescue bales. It has an electric tie with two twine tubes - so, unlike my previous baler, it runs two strings simultaneously. Well, this weekend I baled 34 bales - I got real lucky because it rained twice less than a mile away - and I used almost exactly a double bale of twine, which is 16000 feet. That means that I must have put almost 500 feet on each bale. That seems like too much. How much should you wrap a bale with?

I have a Gehl 1875 that hold three rolls of twine per side. I do mostly 5x5 and 5x6 and generally get about 110 to 125 rolls before I have to reload the twine. I also like to get a wrap every 1 1/2 or 2 inches. Seem to hold together better in the long rull and sure look alot better than only 5 or 6 wraps.

that is abut the amount of twine i have been puting on straw. on alfalfa i get about 50 bales out of 20,000 box, (two balls)

Yes that does seem like a lot. If I did he math right that is wrapping the string about one and one half inches apart or about thirty three wraps. I try to wrap mine about three inches apart and some might think that is too much I see a lot of bales that look like they only have about five wraps.

With only 5 wraps they would only fall of a trailer once.....
