I am rebuilding a NH 275 and have found that due to rust between the layers of sheet metal on the bottom of the chute the plunger rides on the sheet metal instead of its rollers. When I removed the top piece, there appears to be an identical one below it plus the frame itself for a total of three layers. Is this correct? Can I leave out the top one which has been eaten away in several places?

The top one is a flat bar designed for the bearings to run on. It will have (if not rusted away)3 or 4, 5/16" x 1/2" bolts holding it to the bottom of the bale chute. The middle one is a shim to give the top one proper clearance from the bottom of the chute. Flat bar, (drilled & tapped) & shim for my 273 was just less than $40.00, should be similiar for yours.

Julian, I think we need further clarification. Garry is completely right, but he is referring to the 3/4" wide roller guide that the 2 heavy rollers should ride on. However, by what you are writing, I didn't feel you were talking about that guide. Are you referring to the complete bottom of the bale chamber? The 275 is the only model that I am aware of that had a replacable floor. However, it should have only 2 metal thicknesses, not 3. Can you clarify, please. Steve

You are correct Steve- I am talking about the floor and it does seem to be two nearly identical floors- a permanent one attached to the chute frame and the replaceable one attached with carriage bolts. I was told it is no longer available ( most of mine is worn away). I was considering just leaving it out rather than having one made from scratch. There is a considerable amount of rust between the frame and permanent floor and I am afraid a new floor would also start to interfere with the plunger. It was already sliding on what was left of the replaceable floor. Thanks for your comments.
