Oil seal on JD#5 mower.

I really need to get this seal replaced. Leaking oil out fast now.
Its the one in the front- bottom. The one behind pitmon arm fly wheel.
I was looking at it today and cant figure out how the fly wheel comes off the shaft.
Any one out there replace this seal before? Whats the process?

The key in the "flywheel" is tapered. Take a puller and pull the "flywheel" part way off, then tap it back toward the gearbox. This should loosen up the key. Pull the key out and a couple of raps on the "flywheel" and you are home free.

I have a #5 also that leaks. Only had it a year and both the upper and lower seals will be replaced this fall. From what I understand you need to pull the square key in the and then the counter balance wheel will come off. Some people use a puller to just remove the wheel.

Are you using heavy gear oil.... 90 or 140 weight?

90 wgt right now. I picked up a couple jugs of 140 wgt today I will try that.

Not sure how to remove shaft or flywheel. I have a # 5 that leeks like that have used for years just keep enough oil in the bottom so it picks up on the chain and not run out the front don,t think you will have any problem. More of them run like that than was full like they should be. I,m sure there is a brass bushing in there it will get oil from the chain if you think it is low just add to it. Not much help anyway don,t think it is a major problem.

I just dissassembled the gear box on a #5 this spring. I couldn't get the flywheel off so I took the complete flywheel, shaft and bearings out the front side. The shaft runs on timken type bearings. The sprocket on the back side of the shaft screws onto the shaft, but of course, you must remove the top cover first, and disconnect the chain. After much frustration, I finally got the thing apart. I think there are metal shims that are used to adjust the tightness of the bearings.
