Bush Hog blade sharpening

My very old bush hog, bought used and rode hard, has started to beat the grass down rather than cut it. I went to sharpen the blades with a hand angle grinder and the blade is almost blunt. To get an edge with even a 30 degree angle, I would have to remove 1/4 inch of metal. Is this the right profile for a bush hog blade or has it just been neglected for a long time. Maybe new blades?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

dave i'm with jerry too.. if you don't have a good air impack wrench, access to a torch (blue tip wrench) etc. you need to get a disk grinder, safty glasses and stocking hat, block up the hog and spend some time under their, go look at a set of new blades, gives you a idea of the angle you want,, yo'ur like hogging with sharp blades

Neglected for a LONG time...!!

I think forget the anglegrinder.....get a 3/4 horsex8" grinder and take the blades off, and grind them...!! Grease the blade pivots when you re-install them. Blades are really not all that expensive for the Bush Hog...I think you would want to put new ones on, and save the old ones (sharpened) for the next change...!! The new blades probably are Nitrided on the surface, making them a LOT more wear-resistant than heavily sharpened ones... TSC carries many blades, I think you will find them for around $20.oo a piece...not too bad...!! Good luck...!! Ron..

About the blades, most people think the blades will last forever but neglect to sharpen them. So the rounding is years of mowing. As far as removing them, if you don't have the tools to do it, then the hand grinder does fine. Just remeber to start with a new stone, some safety glasses and some hearing protection.
