I just bought a minnesota running gear for a hay wagon and would like to put a new deck on it for square bales. Would like to know what size to make it. The running gear is 8 ton. Thanks Jeff

Jeff,

You are getting a great perspective on the philosophy of wagons from differnt parts of the county. Even the differences in names ' hay rack', 'hay wagon', 'flat wagon', etc. Most of the wagons here are used for hay and tobacco. As a rule (and I build and sell a lot of flats) 18' and 20' flats are all I can sell. Sold 1 16' flat this year, first one in 10 years. 20' flats are the most popular. When I used to load hay on a flat wagon I went 5 or 6 runs of with a 2 bale cap run on top. NH balewagon replaced them for most of it.

We like smaller gears, 5 to 6 tons, and like 6 1/2 x 12 foot wagons because we can use them in the woods. They hold 50 36-40 inch bales easy in three tiers and can go higher.

If you plan on buying hay & transporting it longer distances, the bigger sizes mentioned work well. If you plan on pulling behind a baler on nearby fields, the shorter sizes are a little handier to deal with, both manuvering & being the guy stacking.

I just built an 8 x 20 rack on an 8-ton IH Gear this spring. Works great and we can get about 225 bales on it without working very hard.

an 8x18 foot rack will hold 200 bales if you do a good job of stacking. any longer and it gets to be too far to carry the bales. For smaller loads and convience sake a 14 or 16 foot rack works well.

We have all 8x16 racks, and we can stack almost 200 bales on every load. did about 1000 bales on 6 wagons, and one was missing it's back.

by rack do ya mean one with sides or just a flatbed with a back on it, i use 8x16 wagons with 8ft sides, i think i get around 150 bales in there stacked but im not sure realy

I'm just talking a flat bed w/ a back. Built a new one out of lumber from 2 bad hay racks and stringers from an old Rex forage wagon. Has an old better bilt running gear underneath, as do most of ours, and it trails really well for it's age and wear.

not hard to stack a lot of bales on a flat rack. ours didn't have backs. The first two layers hang over the sides. If I remember right 4 bales crosswise, then 2 more layers 5 bales lengthwise, Then I think I went back to 3 or 4 crosswise. Just start out wide, keep drawing it in and keep it tied together. We only went 6 or 7 high.

We just stack 3 wide for 4 or 5 layers, then start to taper up. Don't bother crossing them unless on our wagon w/out a back, 3 wide fits perfectly for us on an 8 ft. wide wagon.

Unfortunatley, our barn doesn't have any way to drive up to the mow, we just use an elevator from the gound. We do stack our wagons 7-9 high on a regular basis, just barely clearing a wire going from our barn to the shed. We did do some swamp hay for a farmer's widow for a custom job a couple years now, and we can drive straight up into her barn no problem, their old barn has door's probably about 20ft tall, atleast.
