Saw my 1st disk mower cutting the other day.

A guy was cutting 20 acres next to me.
All I can say is WOW!!!!
Talk about moving. He had that 20 done in no time.
I am not sure how long it was as I was baling wit me NH68. But I do remember saying to my self wow I am really getting a good start today and he was on to his next 20.

I remember first time I saw one, back in the mid '80's. We were custom cutting and got in some timothy /orchardgrass. It had been a really wet spring and the guy had put about 450# of ammonium nitrate per acre. Couldn't go 20' with the haybine without clogging up. Hay was all down and twisted. We hired this guy with a brand new Vicon 8'. Told dad that day we had to have us 1 of them. We've had 6 since, wouldn't go back.

My Brother has one JD moco Cut for sale .
He just loves it . The hay will cure a lot faster in his wet area. He had neck problems so went to a SP. Because he couldn't look back any more. His pull type has only one year on its like new. 550 A. is all its cut . if any one is interested he has a good price of it. they are almost indestrucable.

Kelly, Seems like most of the grass hay here in Texas is laid down with disc cutters. The sudan/johnson grass, wheat/oats are being laid down with a mo-co of some kind or another. I know of some custom balers in the Ft. Worth ares that cut coastal burmuda grass they have worn out countless disc rigs. As said previously a disc isn't necessarly the best rig. I depends on the crop your cutting. For instance we have Fire Ants down here now , so this has come to ba a factor in what kind of cutter these guy are buying.

Coming from a person who used a NI 5209 Disc, then went back to a NH 489 Haybine, I have a different opinion. Sure you can go faster with the disc, but it doesn't give the nicest cut, it seems the regrowth occurs quicker with a Haybine. Also, the hay is fed into the conditioning rolls at all angles on a discbine..... So they don't seem to condition as well as a haybine which feeds the hay into the conditioning rolls at 90 degrees. The speed is actually a very little in difference when you get up to the newer haybines. I can keep right behind a NI 5209 on a IH 766D with our 706D and our NH 489. Plus the haybine just seems to do better in heavy alfalfa, it seems like it actually "CUTS" instead of "TEARING OFF"..... .

In all fairness, Alfalfa is not grown over here, so I cannot comment. I do not know whether any attempt was made to market haybines over here, I have never seen one. All I can say is these days little or no hay or silage is cut in UK with a sickle type cutter bar. I know that the crimper type conditioner soon died a death over here,in this country the tine type conditioner reigns supreme, probably differing climatic conditions have a lot to do with it. What ever suits you best is what I say!

Roy in UK, could you explain a tine type conditioner? I have read that a lot of hay technology has been developed over there and in some places crops are so thick that if cut with an old sickle mower they can not fall down. Is this an exageration? Thanks

Hi Sid, I think Thurlow has got it in one! The flails are either nylon or steel. The disc and drum mowers were developed in Holland by the Zweegers brothers. I have seen some crops of silage and hay over here that shall we say 'have had rather a lot of rain and fertilizer' that no sickle would touch.

I 'spect what he calls a tine conditioner is what we call a flail conditioner; stems are not crushed, but some of the outer covering (of the stems) is flailed off, allowing moisture to escape....

I've got a JD 1327 with the flails and love it. this machine is on the second set of skids! anybody know how long it takes to wear thru 3/8 plate? still origional flail. also if it cuts uneven just drop down a gear and TRY SOME NEW BLADES the only real drawback is if you have rocks(baseball and larger). I will concede to a haybine in second cut 'falfa

I bet your jaw was on your kneecaps!
I saw my first drum mower ( which really came out before the disc ) demonstrated on our farm when I was 15. I was completely bowled over by it. When we changed to a disc, we found it far superior to the drum. Very rarely do you ever see a disc or drum mower clog up.

Flails are fast. However problems develop if tractor and mower are not matched causing devastating pto and gearbox destruction.
