I recently bought an unknown brand brushog that has a bad leak at the bottom of the gearbox. How do I go about changeing the seal? Are the seals pretty common? It looks pretty close to my other 'hog (Bronco brand). Turning it over to work on it is my thought, but how would I hold the shaft to take the castlelated nut off the bottom of the pan that holds the blades? I would think it'll be tight. Or would I be better off raising the 'hog and blocking it to keep the pto shaft engaged and let the engine steady the gearbox to loosen the castlenut. I don't relish crawling under the 'hog even in the safest conditions. Thats why I don't change my own oil on my vehicles.
TIA
DON TX

You need to drop the blade off the bottom. Then you will be able to take the gear box off the deck. There should be a cover on the bottom of the gear box which holds the oil seal. The oil seal will have to be pulled out of the housing. Be carefull not to damage the numbers on the old oil seal. Chances are the numbers will be up inside where you can't read them until after you remove it from the housing. Do not put anything up in there to pry it out, you are likely to damage the numbers. If you can get it out and read the numbers, you should be able to get a replacement seal and press it in.

I would not bother flipping the mower over, because you have to work from above and below to get the nuts off the bolts holding the gear box to the deck.

Thanks. I'll boom it up like I do when I sharpen the blades. Block it and wrench away. I have another 'hog so I can take my time. Maybe in late August the 100* + days will be over. Thanks again. DON TX

It won't hurt a thing to flip it over, just stay clear when you do and let it down easy.
