I just picked this up at a local farm estate auction. It has sat for a couple years outside. What do I need to know about sickle mowers in general, and JD 37's in particular? What should I be looking at to check it over, and are there any tips on running a sickle mower that you all have? Thank you. -DB

I agree with Dan.
Also, when raising and lowering the cutter bar, always use the heel of you hand on the back edge of the bar and keep your fingers away from the sickle.
The 37 was a very good mower and should work well if you follow the Operator's manual. Availible at the dealer.

The first thing I usually purchase after an implement, especially one with all the moving parts of a mower, is the operator's manuel and parts book. The manuel will tell you how to adjust things right for the mower. It needs to have proper register and lead to cut right. The parts book shows what should be where. On a used mower or other implement you don't know if it was put back right last time. Otherwise check for sharp ledger plates, pull sickle and sharpen if needed. Make sure hold downs on bar are keeping sickle close to guards. Check guard allignment (up and down) Check that special ledger plate on outer end and shear plate on inner end are there. Check oil in gear box. I'm not familiar with the #37 but this is pretty much common to all mowers.
