I need to change the twine finger cam on my NH68, and can't seem to get the knotter clutch off. NH man said you just pull the gear, take out the bolt and the clutch should pull off. Won't budge. Tried heat and some good whacks on the back of it down at the shaft, using a piece of wood to deaden the blows, but I surely don't want to crack the casting. Any tips?

Look closely at the bolt you took out, did it break off, if so LOL, mine did that, after drilling and drilling, I tried an easy out, wound up grinding the clutch until the piece of bolt came out, then it came right off. Did a temp fix by drilling at tapping another hole, is working fine, but will replace at the end of the season. Keep in mind the clutch is keyed.

LOL

Guess it was just on there for 50 or so years. Just kept heating and beating (carefully, of course) and it eventually worked off. Finally chased the knotter problem down that's been kicking my butt. The baler would work fine, then miss a bunch, then work again. Drove me nuts. After going through about everything on the machine, turns out the woodruff key in the twine finger cam had sheared, and the cam would change positions as it rotated on the shaft! Don't know why the shear bolt didn't break first, but dang if it wasn't the problem. .50 cent part, she runs like a swiss watch. Now if I can convince the NH dealer to take back that $150 in new parts I ordered...
Ps. Put her back together with anti-seize this time. Maybe she won't be so hard to take apart after the next 50 years.
