Tedder question

With much assistance from people on this board I got the old Kuhn GRS21 tedder/rake working and tried it out last week. It worked great in the tedding position (although I adjusted the tilt angle of the rotors for ground clearance reasons). It also seemed to work well raking but I ended up breaking off two arms (broke off the bolts). Maybe I'm missing something but it seems the ground clearance is a problem. I have the wheels adjusted to the highest adjustment (I think there's only two) and my top link as long as it will go. Is there some trick to setting these things up properly?

Experience has taught me that any machine that
performs more then one function usually doesn't
do any very well. I've used one of those Kuhn two
function rakes and it was a good tedder, rotten
rake. The arms are too low in the raking mode so
any stumps, rocks or whatever cause big trouble.
Best bet is to go slow and be careful.

Is it possible to rake with the arms in the tedding position?

If your tractor has a PTO with ground speed
position you can do it. My Massey has this
type PTO that only turns when the tractor is
moving and if you select the right ground speed
the tedder arms will turn slower and rake the
hay. My PTO makes one turn for each 18" of
ground traveled, so it's a good way to slow
down the tedder. I also have regular 540 PTO.
The rake/tedder we used to use was finally used
just for tedding as we could not keep the arms
from breaking off.

Not to be a comedian but check ground speed. Lots of folks want to ted in 'road gear'. I kept breaking gear box castings (with arms). Deal told me that even though my tedder gets an 18' swath and my disc mower 8 it should take as long to ted as to mow. Any faster and it bounces causing verticle impact damage.

He was right, I followed his instructions and didn't even break a tooth this year. A boy helped me the other day and he broke an arm and another gear box. Should have taken 5 hrs and he was finished in 3.
