Well we finally got some of this stuff baled. On a 10 acre field I started baling about 11:30 am. Got about 1/2 maybe more done by 6:30 pm. My NH68 had some intial teething problems. All together I broke about 15 shear bolts. My needle safety catch had slipped out of adjustment. Took me awile before I caught on. DOH!

Knotters worked ok after I messed with them a bit. Left knotter never missed a tie. That right side knotter was missing about every 20 bales. I adjusted the knife arm and that took away the 3 bale slide. You know thats where a knott sticks on the bill hook and it takes 3 bales broke to catch it.
After that they worked better but still misses every now and then. When I go back to look at it there seems to be alot of chaff and stuff around that knotter under the knife arm. I wonder if that could cause some miss ties?
All and all not to bad a day. We got about 600+ bales off half the field. 300 for me 300 for the owner.
I wont be doing any more oats hay any time soon. This stuff can be a big pain in the ars.
Took a week to dry and cant make bugger than one 7' swath for a windrow else it clogs the baler. That makes for alot of rounds around the field.

Kelly, I had the same problem with the twine hanging up on the billhook. It was just like Jim S. said, the brass roller on the billhook looked more like a triangle than round. I was lucky to have gotten a good spare with the baler. I do have one question for those who read this though, how can I make my bales longer? Do I have to adjust the hard stop on the bar that trips the knotters? Right now my bales are only 28-32 inches long.Ihad one older fella tell me that the older balers always made shorter bales, but have since heard different. I've got 300 of these short bales right now, and should be baling another 100 or so tomorrow. In respect to your breaking those shearbolts, I broke 8 my first 3 hours. After talking to a NH mechanic,he told me to adjust my needle timing by making sure that the needles came into the baling chamber at the same time as the plunger. I had to retard the timing on the knotters one tooth to achieve this, after that it ran like a champ. Congrats on your land purchase, good luck with your baling, and thanks for all your help. Greg P.S. the adjustment on the timing allowed the plunger to clear the safety latch.

Kelly, Don't beat yourself up! This is a learning curve for you. It will always take some getting use to a piece of equipment. Getting to know its personality. In 10 acers? If your lucky and that baler is carless. More likely in 150 to 200 acers you should have a easy truse with this ol'gal. My only comment on oats is, Here in central Texas
most folks use a MO-Co of some variety. Oats take about 3 days to be ready to bale.
Take heart, Lift up your eyes to the Lord in prayer. Get going Tomorrow!!
Good Luck,
John A.

PS. When you get a chance bring us up to date on your 300.

Thanks John.
Yea thats the reason I took this job was to get some use under my belt.
I am not unhappy with my baler. The more I tinker the better it gets. I figured after a complete rebuild there would be some fine tuning.
I got 100 bales of this oats hay sold so that pays the expences.
Pretty cool that I only need to sell 100 bales to break even on the deal. Rest is gravy or should I say 300 fix up money :-)

Its a good idea to clear all that chaff and stuff from around the knotters when you stop for any reason ( maintenance, ham sandwich, call of nature etc ) These new 'Big square' balers have a fan that blows onto the knotters to keep them clean.

You are beating up your equipment for nothing, keep the equipment at home and enjoy putting up 5 acres of your own hay and babying your equipment. You put too much work into that baler to beat it up, anyway it sounds like you are getting the job done and learning. Have fun.

Yup learning alot. We decided to buy 20 acres about 25 mi north of us. nice little grass hay field. ( can you say Tractor hiding spot!!!)

I would like to get one of those AC all crop combines. That would be fun on 4 or 5 acres of oats.

When we have problems with one side not tieing or hanging up on the billhook,we found that the brass roller which operates the knife arm is usually worn. The knotter frame could also be worn where this roller rides & i have built it up with brazing rod & it worked for a while. It doesnt take much to stop a knotter from working & by the way, our baler(275NH) will miss once in a while as well only on the right side but usually only if we have it set too tight.Oh,I found that oats make great round bale silage.
