I have read several post mentioning bale baskets. What are they and who makes them?

Thanks!
Bill

yes you do NOT use a thrower. but you can make one out of 2x4s like one guy in farm show magazine did and saved a bundle.!!but i have heard they can curve the bales kind of like a thrower does so you have to straighten them out when stacking. lots of chains on a NH stack wagon tho. but used in good shape might not be bad.

What most folks call bale baskets are haywagons with added metal cagelike sides and back. They are used for balers that have a kicker to make baling and loading the wagon a one man job. Here is a pic of a fancy one if this works

Nope, a bale basket is its own thing. A metal kicker rack wagon is different. A bale basket is loaded with a chute extension off the baler. A mechanical bale thrower of any sort is not needed when using a bale basket.

It looks like there is a "chute" that goes up to the basket. Does the bale just get pushed up into the basket by the bale behind it, or does it have a mechanism that pulls it up (can't tell from the picture).

This series of posts has got me interested in looking at a bale basket, but I have to do a lot of turning while baling (small patches I mow and bale). The chute position/alignment with the baler chute would seem to be critical to having the bales flow smoothly into the basket.

Could you elaborate a little more on the precise function?

Thanks.

Any of you fellows who want to know about bale baskets let me know. I ran three of them for close to 10 seasons and loved them. So far all of input I see on this site is not correct. You do not extend chute on baler! YES you can made pretty sharp turns with no trouble. When you still stack by hand in barn you can not tell they came out of basket wagon versus plain hay rack. I got along so well with them I could also sell you a new one now since I have dealership. THEY DO WORK,straw, alfalfa, grass did it all. Call 319-257-6764 if you really want the facts and tricks to these

I got one last year, like it very much. I agree with Rick, got some not-quite right info on here about them. :)

I have a few pics of mine in operation, if anyone wants them, or would like to post them here for me, I can email them.

I'm kinda in a hurry today, sorry, but can answer specific questions if anyone asks.

Works _great_ in alfalfa, doesn't like sharp turns in grass hay or slippery straw, but still works fine. Needs a special hitch directly centered under the bale discharge on the baler (no extra chute used) some JD balers have adjustable hitches, bracket can be made for NH to center hitch.

Generally they hold 120 bales or so, handle the bales better than a kicker, but you gotta watch close that they tied or you get a haystack, makes haying with 1 person pretty easy. EZ Trail made them, mine comes from St. Cloud Minnesota sorry I can't remember the co now, I've seen green ones too. They pull like a 2-wheel trailer, the front is a caster wheel, can be pinned up to tow empty with a pickup, and I am able to back up around the silo to the barn door with the baler & basket, but it takes some practice. :)

Shoot some more questions at me. I like it, & I _don't_ sell them so no extra insentive for me. :)

Paul; If you were having trouble with grass hay and straw this reall y suprise me. I did over 5000year in straw never missed a beat on corners. Sounds like you need to shorten your tongue setting. You want them as close as possible to bale chamber. Yes I can sell them, but don't care if buy or not I just want people to know they WILL WORK but must be set right and hooked up correctly. Thanks Rick

Didn't mean my comment as a knock on you, just my bad sense of humor! ;)

I did not get a manual with my basket, got it at an auction for $1600 with a manufatured hitch bracket for a NH baler. I agree being a little closer might help, but I don't see any ajustments on my particular rig.

Are you pulling it behind a New Holland Baler. If so your hitch is it a two piece piece of pipe. If so drill another hole slide it further forward. Rick. I also made a short tapered chute extension that would go right under bale chute, this took that little bulge out you get before entering bal wagon chute. I still have it if you would like to but it on your baler,I ran a Deere but it should still fit your chamber. I really liked mine till I sold them to fellow in Ohio. I went to grapple/ accumulator setup. Rick

I agree Jerry it looks like the bale is pushed into the wagon and not thrown in by a kicker. Please someone help us here.If the system works with-out a kicker and uses just the baler pushing the bales up wow great.I need to know more please.dave

In the right side of the picture is the 'intake'. You use an extended chute on the baler which pushes the bales into this chute where they are then pushed by the baler's plunger force up into the basket. Then you can back the basket to the barn, trip it, and dump the hay. Still have to rick in the barn. I really researched them 6 years ago before deciding a NH automatic wagon more fit my needs. Saw problems on turning the bale basket, plus I would need at least 3 of them (at $3000 each, and 5 would be better). And would still have to rick the hay. For that money I got a good stackliner, built sheds on my barns to dump in, and still had money left over.

Around here a bale sled (or buncher) is just like a sled that follows the baler. Bales fall into it and you release a group of bales(on the ground) at a convenient spot. You still have to load the wagon, but strategic placement of those bunched bales can make the job less onerous, especially if help is limited.
