Sickle Bar Problems

I have a New Holland Model 120 Sickle bar mower that I use on my 52 ford 8n. The bar cuts fine but the head always gets pluged. There is an opening in the head, like other mowers, and the cutter bar packs it just as tight as could be. I finaly got fed up and welded a plate over the opening, leaving only about 1/32" clearance for the knife. It still plugs up! On the extent of the pitman stroke, the last knife stops in the middle of the ledger plate in the head, should the cutter bar be 1 knife longer so there is something pulling back through the head on the return stroke? I did put a new ledger plate in the head, the grass that is plugging it up is being cut, but it doesn't seem to want to fall off the back of the bar, short grass, tall grass, it doesn't matter. I mainly use it for cutting whitetail clover (about 4.5 ac) at the hunting cabin. Thanks for your help.

On my AC, to be in register, the sections do not stop in the center of the guard. The inner stroke is to the left of the guard, and the outer stroke is to the right of the guard. I also use a double section on the end. The ledger plate on the outer shoe is probably worn out. It is not as easy to replace as the guards, so most mow with a worn ledger plate. In grass, this is very noticable. You may need about a 3/4 in longer pitman stick. I make my own sticks. Get the manual on your mower.

There is also what is called timing the mower. It involves adjusting so that the knives are centered in the guards at the ends of the sickle bar stroke. A manual for your mower will explain the adjustment procedure. Correct timing will greatly improve mower performance.

I checked the timing, its good, the knife point stops right in the center of the guard.

I have used the 1 1/2 end sections on all my sickle mowers. My JD #8 has a piece over the end knife that adjusts for minimum clearence, the #5 didn't. Don't notice a lot of difference in plugging. Short grass is tough to cut, if you move a little faster the grass will flow over th bar better.

You may need a pitman stick that is a little longer. The last section has to go past the last guard for the scissor action.

A double knife may be the easier solution.

They do make a blade that goes on the end of a sickle bar it looks like it has a double blade that is longer than a normal knife.Any place that sells regular blades should have them.dave
