Would like to have an IH plow the same vintage and right size for my 1950 WD-9 (no hydraulics). Anyone with help in where I might start looking I would appreciate hearing from.

Rich: I presume you are looking for a 4-5 bottom 14" or 16" bottoms. In the 1950s era you are looking for a number 8, 14, 15 or 16. I think you will find most of the 15 and 16 are hydraulic lift.

By now most of these plows will not have model numbers left on them. Unless you are right up on these you will probably need some literature with pictures. These plows are probably around places across the continant where W9 was sold. They would be just a bit more than Farmalls of the day could handle. So go west young man, go west, either in US or Canada.

Thanks, Hugh. You are another of the many reasons I like Canada for a neighbor.
I think I will be getting the plow that went with my WD-9. My wife's relatives in Western Minnesota (where the WD-9 came from) seemed to have found it. We will find out in August. They said it was a plow made for hydraulics but the great uncle didn't like (or have?) hydraulics so the plow was converted. Am most curious.

Rich: If it weren't for politicians, bureaucrats and millionairs, we would probably be a lot better neighbors to each other than we are allready. For the most part our ancestors were people that left other parts of the world for a better life in North America. I believe most of us have found that better life.

On the plow, like I said go west young man. I think you probably might take a look at hydraulics for the WD9. Those clutch lift plows worked fine on 1 and 2 bottom plows. The problem on the 3, 4 and 5 bottom is traction on that lift wheel with the added weight of the larger plow. There were a lot of guys like your ancestor who just were not going to move to hydraulics. There have been a good many 4 letter adjectives uttered by men operating these larger plows, when all that land wheel did was slide for 20' and by the time the plow penetrated the soil he had already given up and retriped and circled back to the headland to start over. This time he was faced with the 10' furrows where plow did penetrate.

Hugh, thanks again. You have made me even more curious and excited to see the plow. I am thinking about hydraulics for the 9.

But I also have to tell you I used to look through the YT boards for tractors, implements I am interested in or know just a little about. Now I look for your name to read another of your stories. You really are interesting to visit with. And it is the teacher in me that notices your stories are well written, you know, correct grammar, spelling, etc. Your typing even is a quality not always seen on the Internet. I bet you'd have an interesting story about your educational upbringing. Keep it up. Thanks again.

Rich: Actually I was not one of the better students. My head was burried in farming. I grew up on a dairy farm in Nova Scotia. When I finished high school I enrolled at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. While there I met my wife who was then a Home Economics student at the Nova Scotia Teachers College. That influence probably had more to do with my spelling, writing, etc. than anything else. My wife came from a long line of school teachers. Her only brother is a teacher and her mother and mother's two brothers were teachers.

We broke the line as none of our children are teachers nor dairy farmers. Our oldest daughter and husband have a catering business. Our younger daughter graduated with honours in an honours english program at McGill University in Montreal. That really did have an influence on my writing ability. I used to get involved in some quite heavy writing. Brought more than one politician to his knees. Our younger daughter is manageing editor of a national magazine here in Canada. Our son is involved in the Garden center industry.

One of the most exaspirating things I encounter on tractor forums is guys apologizing for having such a long post. When It comes right down to it, problems with these old tractors take so many words to say it, there is no shortcut. I have tried in many ways to get the guys to be precise about their tractor problem. Details are very important no matter who is trying to help you with the problem. So this is to all guys don't be coming on forums apologizing for being long winded. It's that little detail you may think not important, that may solve your problem. When was the last time your President or here in Canada our Prime Minister ever apologized for being long winded. You have every right to be just as long winded about your tractor.

There is a lot of critism on forums about the same question being asked over and over again. I think it is good those items are being asked over and over, you just never know when someone is going to come up with a better answer than the regulars did 3 years ago. Every day I go on forums at YT I plan to learn as much as I give, and most days I do. I think the administration here at YT do a tremendous job. I believe it is our duty to make it even better. So guys no matter who you are if you think you have a good idea lets discuss it. Just stay within Kim's guidelines. And Rich you have a good day, and I will not apologize for being long winded.
