Hey guys. I got my new Knotter assembly from New Holland yesterday. I know there was some debate about wether it would be a complete knotter or just a knotter frame for $145.

Well I am holding in my hand a complete knotter with new bill hook, Knife arm and twine holder the whole works And reciept for $145. Well actually $149.89 with shipping.

If you are in need of a knotter nows the time to get it. Heck I got mine for a spare for that money.

Just to stir the pot, a lot of people blame the knotters for their problems, when it's actually the TWINE. They buy on price only and don't consider the quality, or assume that "they're all the same". The price difference between New Hollands high quality CONSISTANT twine and the el-cheapo stuff is only 1 or 2 bales of hay. Can anyone have their baler down for the price of a couple of bales? P.S. I don't work for the New Holland dealer anymore so this aint an advertisement, just used to put up a lot of hay. P.P.S I prefer the 7200 sisal in older balers.

I second the statement on the thicker, 7200 sisal.
I had a 40 year old MF #3 and this tied about 95%, EXCEPT for one time when I tried the thinner, I think 9000 sisal. This dropped tying rate to about 60% and made for a few long afternoons until I ran this twine through. Adjustment might be possible as I now have a NH 310 that does fine with the 9000 sisal.

Another one with a wooden spoon! Not only the quality of the twine but I used to find that the amount of twine TENSION is critical. I am not just talking about balers with knotters either. Often when a round baler fails to cut off the twine at the end of the wrapping cycle, it is due to insufficient twine tension.

I think the knotters are the same since time began. NH should use a lot of replaced by number in their parts lookup or the same PN with -01 to show improvements. The two improvements I know of is the knife arm is about twice as thick over a S77 and what Mike mentioned of five disks. So each time they improved it would be a different part number and if your NH dealer didnt keep up with replaced by then their going to tell you its no longer available. The site Ive attached shows a knotter and under it says *B5371 Knotter
Complete Assembly
Suits all models* which may or may not be a NH number. I'm going to write them and NH for clarification of models.

This knotter in picture is sold in Australia by that company called Bare-Co. On some of them that i have dismantled i find New Holland part numbers but they are not made by New Holland. As far as i know they are made in Germany. For curiosity they cost $670 Australian. We get ripped off for everyting.

I had a look at the site. 'Bog standard' Rasspe knotter. We had an AC 300 with the same knotters.
Different to say, Claas or IH knotters though.

The New Holland part numbers for knotters are a little odd. According to our NH dealer the knotter that we bought for $147 isnt the right part number for a NH 68 because the knotter is newer. The "right" knotter for a 68 is no longer available. I would suggest taking your knotter into a dealer and comparing it to the ones they have. You will find that the part numbers arent the same, but the knotters are. On ours the original knotter had something like 3 twine disks while the new one was improved and had 5 disks so if had a different part number.

You are right about the twine discks. This new one has 5 instead of 3.

darn, i called my dealer and he said that that price was right for that knotter, but it wasnt the right knotter for my baler, but after talking to him a bit i think that next time i get some hay down i will have him come out and adjust it all up and replace the knives, he said 55 bucks an hour from the time they leave the shop to the time they return, and it would probably be about 4 hours all together, so i think i may go that route, my baler only misses maybe once every 30-50 bales but it realy is inconvenient with a wagon and kicker to have to go take out all the loose hay

yea thats possible but like he was saying, even if i got a whole new knotter then there is still other adjustments that need to be setup just right, like the needle to knotter etc, so i think i may just pay the money and have him take a look at it, he is a very well trusted dealer and i have heard nothing but good about his expertise on NH balers, my father and his friends all used this guy back in the 70s and 80s on there NH balers. i think it would be money safely spent.

The baler expert in our neighborhood when I was a kid was an old guy named Stan. Don't know where he got his expertise, but he was a wizard. The interesting part was that he was an "alcoholic's alcoholic". No sneaky bottle under the pickup seat for him- when he came over to the job, the jug came with him, and occupied a prominent spot on top of the baler. If it offended you, you need merely say the word, and he would get in his pickup and leave forever (or at least until you begged him to come back, and promised to mind your own business in the future). He'd take a pull every once in awhile, all day long. The boss sent me over to his place one day to fetch him for a problem- I was in awe (and shock) at the sight of a full size garbage can behind the house, literally overflowing with nothing but whisky bottles. All the same brand. They caught him moonshining a few years later- turns out the garbage can was not waiting to go to the dump, but was his carefully managed stock of empties for his moonshine. It was the perfect cover- everyone knew of his drinking, and the cops had come around before, but thought he must be buying the stuff, in light of the number of empties laying around. He died a few years ago, pushing 80. I credit his long life to not smoking, and avoiding fatty foods. In fact, avoiding foods of all kinds, in favor of a liquid diet.

Kelly C:

sorry, I must have missed an earlier thread...what model baler does that knotter fit? I've got a NH 66 I wouldn't mind having a spare for.

I am not 100% possitive about the 66.
The knotters are the same on most NH balers.
Grab that part# from my other post and call your dealer and ask if that fits a 66.

When you say knotter, do you mean the whole assembly making 2 knots or just one knot assembly that make one individual knot?

Thanx,

Jerry

Jerry.
You get one complete knotter. I.E. one side.
I talked to my dealer and he said last summer these sold for $450. He didnt know why the big price drop. I just figured I better get one before they figure it out.
Here is a photo.
