Last week I had stuck a sign out in the front yard for custom hay baling. Well this morning at about 9am some one came asking about getting some hay done.
I am doing 10 acres of Oats hay for him this cutting. Then I get dibbs on the Alfalfa after that when its ready. The place is 17 mi from my place and I am paying for not getting my tariler finnished. I had to road trip my H and the #5 over there took 2 hrs.
I got started about 5:30 this eve and sure enough I had to fix a few things on the mower and pull a few cloggs out. The 1st row took about a hr to do.
After that 1st row avery thing was working excellent!!! Cutting in 3rd gear. Watching that hay fall was a blast. Now I hope it dont rain.

I bought my #5 from consignment at the JD dealer for $50.00. The only thing I did was build the hitch for my M. Put gear lube in the gear box and start cutting. I have cut around 100 acres so far without any problems.

Not quite so lucky with mine except I only paid $25 for mine.
I lost the out side wear pad today and I got a couple rock gaurds that just wont tighten up. I must have wrenched on them 10 times. Grinder coming out when I get her home. Gona put new ones on that I can keep tight.
I also sprung a good leak at the seal on the gear box. Behind the pitmon bearing.
And I need a different pto shaft. This one sucks.
Even with these diffeculties it still mowed great!
I will have her all fixed up for the next field.
Here is a photo of the field after I finnished mowing.

What type bolts are you using on guards? I use the regular guard bolts with the taper type nuts and have no problem keeping them tight. If you have rocks it mich bounce them loose or if there is excessive vibration.

These are the ones that were on there when I got it. They had put the bolt in the wrong way. Its not catching on the square grove. The older gaurds dont have a square hole to catch the bolt and where he put it through hold down clips they dont cantact the square section of the bar. I will just grind them off and replace with a gaurd that has a square hole.

I'm starting to get some inquiries about doing that for others and I have no idea what to charge. How much do you charge? Per bale? per acre? Combination?

I do a neighbor's small piece, but he just wants it kept cut an neat looking. He doesn't care about the hay so I do it for the hay which I then sell to my sister. I've never done it just for cash.

Here in Colorado for cutting and baling the charge is $1 to 1.60 per bale. If I keep the hay, I pay $1 per bale, if they keep the hay, I charge $1 per bale.

With this job we decided to split it 50/50.
I think thats a pretty good deal for them. I was planing on doing 2 3rd split. 1/3rd them 2/3rd me.
This is my 1st real contract so I gave a deal just to get some bussiness. I was bumming out before the guy showed up. A 3 day weekend and me not doing any hay.
when I do do a cash deal I was going to charge $1.00 a bale in the field. I may raise that to $1.15 a bale if they want me to mow. It took me 5 1/2 hrs to mow that 10 acres.
I am not really in a mood to fork out any money buying hay I am baling. So wont be doing that this year. Cant see bustin my butt and havin to write a check after. I also worried about commiting to $1.00 a bale and have the stuff get rained on and then I am on the hook for 5 or 6 hundred for junk.

Kelly,

Do you also have to drive your rake and baler that same 17 miles to get that job done? You are more dedicated than me - I wouldn't even think of driving my tractors that far without hauling. If you are going to do custom baling, don't forget about a minimum charge. If you charge $1 per bale, but the landowner has not fertilized or limed and the hay is thin, you come out real short. It takes the same amount of your time to haul (or drive!) your equipment, the same amount of passes to cut, ted, and rake, but you end up with few bales. Most folks I know charge for a minimum number of bales/acre, round or square. From what I have read on this forum, the situation varies depending upon your location, but around here, I can get more hay than I have time for just for cutting it and baling it. Landowners just want their fields cut without having to pay for it. I baled 60 - 70 acres last year about 5 miles away at one fellows place - good Tift44 bermuda. But after hauling all my equipment over there and back to do my own hay for 2 or 3 cuttings, plus the landowner wanting to tell me how to do it, I let him keep it this year.

Yea I am learning a little bit on this.
I wont be driving my tactor to another one. Thats to hard on my old H. I am about 3/4 done with my 16' foot trailer, just need the time.
AS far a dragging my eqiupment thats no biggie.
Only takes 1/2 hr to get there but I would say this is about the limmit on distance.
Gas is a real issue 1.50 a gal and I have went through about 30 gal so far. 15 in the tractor and 15 in the truck.
Good think I am not trying to get rich. If I can make back some of the money I put in the baler I will be happy.

It would need that first round or so to get things 'bright and shiny'

Isn't that fun. I have a #9W that I use on my 50 and it has always worked real good. It's fun when it lays down like that and you can just sail along.
