Just purchased a 501, there are like ball and sockets on inside of lift points on each side what are they for and where do they go?
other question is there is a big spring right below where center link hooks that is not hooked to anything, what is it and where does it go?

I too am having the same questions as you. Paul has been helpfull on sharing info on his. My mower was missing the original top link, the clamps for the short arms, and what ever rod link thing goes on the bottom left of the frame pivot. I have the big top spring temporarily tied up to the regular top link to keep it from hitting the drive shaft (that happens on my 960 more than the non row crop type fords).

Is there a source for a shop manual for this mower?

I just used a regular top-link and welded a chain link towards the front of it and i bolt a piece of chain from there to the mower spring when you let down it gets tight and when you pick up the top-link totes the mower it works just like the factory deal for a lot less this also helps hold the mower level the two deals with the ball on them One should hook in the clamp that fastens to lift arm to help it not sway and to keep the clamp from sliding back and forth the one on the right side I do not use.

I have a 9' 501 - I think the guy added the extra 2' - it is blue - the ball joint deals u talk about are like an option they go forward and go into a clamp which bolts onto the 3 point arm - I think they were to keep it from swaying - I put mine on a 75HP White front wheel assist - don't have those sway deals - my 3 point doesn't sway anyway - also there is another ball joint deal that goes to something solid like the drawbar - so that when u pick up the 3 pt the outer end of the cutterbar comes up - these mowers are suppsoed to some with their own top link (mine did have that) the big spring u hook up with the 3 point really high - then it helps hold the mower up - this is the first year I have used it - u can mow just as good without using it but u have to watch how far down u let the 3ph go - with the spring on - u can just throw it all the way down - i have learned a lot about mine - i have pics if u want

I've seen the ball & socets stuff, mine doesn't have that. I think it's for hooking up to different model tractors? Donno tho.

On the upper arm, you should have a special upper arm link. 2 flat bars. The big spring goes to a middle hole on that upper arm. When you lower the mower, this spring will get tension, and actually supports the mower, so it touches the ground, but with very little weight.

I've heard of folks not using this spring, but sure would seem to scalp a lot of ground, add wear to the plates, and not work worth a darn in my damp clay soils.

Hopefully you got the clamps for the ball sockets. The clamps clamp to your lift arms and hook up the lift for the sickle when you raise the three point. The spring hooks to the top like of the sickle. You dont use a standard top link. heres a link to my auction, you can see a complete mower with clamps and top link.
