I was going to replace the wear plates on my mower. Went to New Holland to buy the plates. I got the plates that fit underneath, and the hold downs. The parts guy there told me they don't stock the hold downs for a riveted sickle anymore, but they stock the hold downs for a bolted sickle that will work for both. So thats what I got. The hold downs make the sickle so tight that you can't hardly pound the sickle in. Even if I could get it in, I think the belt would just slip trying to make it run. Thought for awhile the guy gave me the wrong stuff. I checked with a neighbor who has the same mower and the neighbor said that I got the right stuff and that he had the same problem with his mower. The neighbor said he pounded, pried, and bent, and fannagled it to get his mower to work and it still run tight for a couple years. Have any of you ran into this problem, and what did you do about it? I am looking for some ideas here on what I should do. I thought about shimming, but I don't know if there is a possible way to do that.

Those hold downs are fairly thick and hard to bend. I decided to shim them. I got some washer shims .040" thick and put the washers inbetween the wear plates and hold downs. That made things about right. As the hold downs wear I plan on replacing the shims with thinner ones. Just thought I would share what I did.

If you look at your manual, it says to bend them to within .05-20" of the section. You can do this with a section that is not attached to the sickle. Just lay it in on your guards, and bend them as needed.

You can't slide your wear plates too far forward and tighten them down. You need to leave them loose, or to the back, put the sickle in, then bring the wear plates forward to almost touching the back of the sickle.

I just replaced the hold downs on my 1993 451
to the ones for the bolted sickle. Mine came from the factory with shims under the hold downs. I
bolted them on and mowed 15 acres of thick hay with it. I also changed the sickle to bolt on sections. Greatest thing ever. I hate pounding
rivets. Our haybine has bolted sections and that
ruined me on pounding rivets. I recommend anyone
who has a 451/456 to change to bolted sections.
I changed it for under $40.00. I think you need shims under your hold downs.

NH sells shims to install under the hold downs or clips as we call them. Good Luck
