knot hangs

Inside knotter knot hangs on billhook frequently. JD serviceman came out and replaced (inside) billhook and knife ($250) and it works no better than before. Outside knotter works perfectly. I have a manual, but I figure the "expert" should know more than I could get from the manual. Serviceman played with various adjustments. Works good on about 10 bales, then hangs. Any ideas of what I should try next? Also, I'm real new at this. I hear about "feed dogs". What do they look like, what do they do, and how would I know if they are a problem?

Debbie I wish that you were here in East Texas, and I could fix the baler for you. The JD man should know how to set the wiper arm,but there is a trick to it that no book will tell you,but what I have many times is that the twine holder tension flat spring is usually set too tight. Look on the front of the knotter and you will see a flat spring and take a 9/16 wrench and loosen it a flat at a time if loosened too much the twine will come out of the knotter while the bale is being formed. Hope this helps

Just to clarify, this is a NH 269, not a JD (although it was JD serviceman). I don't see a twine holder flat spring in front. The only spring I see is one that goes off to the right. I loosened it a bit and we'll see what happens baling today.

Debbie:

So how is your baler working now? What fixed the problem?
I have the same problem on my 268.

Glen

Look in front or I guess it would be behind the spring that you are talking about and you will see a bolt that a 9/16 wrench will fit that bolt goes through the flat leaf spring. Hope this helps

If the knot hangs on the bill hook, I might think that the wiper arm needs to be adjusted to be more aggressive in wiping the knot off the billhook.

We had a problem one time with the bill hook not opening far enough. Where that little roller rides that opens the bill hook was worn down, we built it up by welding and grinding smooth, it opened the bill hook more and it was aok.

Sounds like the cam that rides on the bill hook is to tight. Or that new knife is not hitting the bill hook.

I had my cam to tight and it would hang on the bill hook and string twine over 2 bales.
I lostened the bolt with the spring out to about 1/4 inch from the end and it works fine now.

Kelly, I had the same problem a few times on my old ford. I could see it hang and would have the stacker pop it off with a screwdriver (baler shut down of course). But anyway, I thought the knot was not being swiped off the billhook by the funny little arm under it. It ties perfect everytime, just doesn't come off the billhook evertime. Could you describe the process of tieing a knot? Like needles come up, this grabs that and so on. I was thinkin I could do a slow motion tie, turn fly wheel by hand and trip the knoters, to see just what is happening. It would be a big help if I knew what it should be doing.

Thanks
Errin

I dont think I could explain exactly how it works very well. I saw some thing some where one time that showed how the knotters worked step bye step.
I am by no means a expert on these things, learned from some of the old hands on here.
Maybe they could help with that part.

From what I understand there are only a few things that could cause the knott to stay on the bill hook.
Dirty nasty bill hook.
Knife arm not contacting the bill hook.
Or the cam on the bill hook to tight.
Bill hook cam binding on bill hook adjusting screw.
Knife arm does not travel far enough.

something as simple as insufficient twine tension can cause hanging knots too.

Well you might not think so but where I sit I'd say you were the expert. I will look at the before mention parts, and no I will not be putting may face (or any other part) in there with the baler running. I did find, and bought, a quote "owners manual" for it on ebay, but since it hasn't arrived yet I may have to wait to see what it says before I go crazy on them. Until then "hey John, left side" just may have to do.

Thanks
Errin

Errin,

I have done this but don't know where the tape is. Take the video camera and sit it to one side and in front of of the knotter and then trip the knotter and turn the flywheel by hand. The video camera will capture it and you can control the speed. You may need a flashlight to make sure all the key parts are well lit.

Jerry D,,

I must admit you have the best ideas for a person to learn how a knotter works.. I did the same with my NH-77. Had the hired man turn the flywheel while I tripped the knotter and watched what happened.. That's the best way for a begineer to learn how it all works.. It does everything in slow motion and you can tell the flywheel turner to stop at any time to check something. Just keep your fingers out of the knotter while it's working. The video camera is also a great idea..
