I am considering cutting and baling 25 acres of coastal bermuda grass for hay (small square bales). What are the pros and cons of cutting with a rotary mower (left side discharge) compared to a sickle mower? Any body been there-done that?
Thanks,

Thanks for the info folks. I'll be on the lookout for a used sickle.

Mike,
I know of people who use batwings to cut hay. They are also the type that's got more money(and hay) than they no what to do with. You CAN use a rotary mower but you WILL have a lot of leaf loss. I would agree that you could find an older sickle bar mower rather cheap and make much better(and more) hay. Another thing to consider is the type of hay that you are cutting. I'm not familar with bermuda grass as there is none around here(Eastern Kentucky). If it's a finer type of grass then you definitly don't won't to use a rotary mower. If you a planning on cutting a lot more in the future, you might even want to consider a haybine. Around here, people swear buy them if they cutting alfalfa or anything along those lines. Also, if it's a finer type grass I would stay away from the disc mowers. Ye,s they are tough and will cut just about anything, but again, depending on what you are cutting, you can experience a lot of leaf loss. Hope this helps and happy haying. If I can help in anyway, please e-mail me. Casey

You can cut hay grass with a bush hog if the sides of the mower are removed so the grass will not get chopped up,but you can probably buy a used sickle mower reasonably and do a better job.

By rotary mower I assume you mean either a bush hog or finishing mower and not a disc mower. Either the bush hog or finish mower will chop the grass and it will be hard for the baler to pick up. I suppose it could be done but I wouldn't recommend it. Sickle bar mowers can be found at a pretty reasonable price.
