Drove by Dordals Implement on my way home. Dang if he didnt have 2 new Holland hay rakes there.
Some how I just had to pull over and take a look.
He had 2 nice rakes a 55 and a 56.
He had put some new tines and some other parts on them and they both worked nice.
Well I just traded my Minnesota hay rake on the NH55.
He gave me $200 on trade for my Minni and we made a deal that if I paint the rake we would split the differnce of the selling price of the minni over $200.
I didnt get a deal, paid a fair price ( thats sorta unlike me). Just thought I'd like to have a NH rake to go with my NH baler.

Hi Kelly, I bid on nice 56 last spring. They hold there value well around here,($850 to $1200) especially a 5 bar.
Ended up buying a J.D. 851. It brought 1/3 of the price of the 56. Needed paint but had new teeth. I like it but a N.H. can't be beat.

My Grandad used a 56 for as long as I had been alive. He was a very fugal guy. That was the one thing he said he had paid alot for and was worth every penny.

I paid $600 for this 55. He wants $900 for the 56.
Its worth that I just figured I could get by with the 55 for $600.

I am going to paint that Minnesota JD green.
I bet he gets $400 for it then. hehehe

I just got in from painting my N.H. 68 baler. Trying to have it ready for baling straw. If this hot weather keeps up it will be in couple weeks. I am going to re-bale some out of the barn to try it out. I'll probally be be on here looking for some help then.

NH built some good rakes. They always sell good around here, even the worn out ones.

We have one of the aforementioned New Ideas. A lot of people don't like them, but we sure can't complain. My dad bought it new in the 60's and we just replaced the belt a few years ago for the first time. That's pretty good considering it sits outside year round. It's nice not having to worry about u-joints and a gear box too.

We've still got several pieces of machinery that Dad bought in the 60's and 70's when farming was hafeway profitable. We have a few breakdowns, but they still get the job done. I wonder if these new high priced pieces of machinery will last that long?

Kelly,
You are going to love that deal. Mine showed up for "free" and took alot of TLC to get it back to working status but work it does. I had several people laugh when they saw it after I had got it home but 6 months later it was ready to go to the field.

HAHAHa
Just wait haying seasons not over yet. I am sure I will do some thing dumb before too long.
Its a good thing I never get upset when I make a mistake. other wise I would be a wreck.

Ok I do get upset when I cant find that sticking wrench I just had in my hand 5 min ago and it takes me 20 mins till it shows up again. Notice I didnt say find? Thats because it shows up in a spot I am sure I looked 5 time before.

With a 13 yr-old in my shop, my tools really have a habit of: 1-disappearing, 2-being left out, 3-mysteriously getting torn up. Sometimes I'm not going as crazy as I thought I was.

I came home with a 256 a couple years ago but it cost me more than $200. New Holland made good rakes. John Deeres the hitch is always busted after a few years. the New Idea rakes with the belt drive and straight axel never were any good.
Did I leave any out?

Oh I paid quite a bit more than $200 for the rake.
$200 was what he gave me in trade.
I have seen worn out NH rakes go for $500 on auctions around here.(broke gear boxes)

I have seen alot of those new Idea rakes around. All look like new and sell cheap.
Wonder why?
Any thing green sells here. I have seen green rakes with broken tine bars sell for $300.

I think I will be happy with my NH the burn for the price will wear out long before the rake does.
