I have a NH 283, the baler probably has less than 10,000 bales through it - still has original paint on the chains. This baler has sit for a long time, I used it for the 1st time yesterday and it shakes my hole tractor with every plunge action (I have a JD 2630) is this ok or is something wrong?

Yes that is common on a 283. It is a very high capacity baler plunger strokes are 105 per minute and it is the bigger chamber with the large flywheel and yes when you wound it up it will shake your tractor, just shovel the hay in it and watch it bale. Good Luck

Hi Chris,

I don't know about your 283 baler but I bale with a model 77 engine type baler and it causes a lot of back and forth action on the tractor.. This is normal with the plunger raming back and forth. As others have said, it will be less when you have a good flow of hay in the chamber..
Don't worry,, just get the hay baled..

I use a 272 motor baler. Unfortunately, I pull it with a 1T ford truck(I mow & rake with horses).
When sitting, it throws the truck all over the place. Truck weighs 7300#. It is fine when baling.

I use a HH S-66 behind my IH 454. Just sitting and not baling, it does shake the tractor some. When baling, it is not too much. The only time I notice it much is when I am turning at end of row. I think some if it has to do with proper pin size in hitch, and angle of tractor, the centrifical force of the crank on the baler.

don't know how heavy a tractor yours is, however should settle out a bit when baling in the field the forward motion seems to smooth out the action some. This is based on baling behind a Int 46, when on Oliver 88 every stroke gov would hit until up to speed then only on the full strokes. Last tractor was an Oliver 1755 with tires loaded would shake tractor if not moving engine never varied no matter how much the baler shook.

Got a neighbor who runs one of those. Uses it with a 50 horse Ford and it looks like he's trying to hang on to a bull when he's baling with it. It gives him a pretty good shaking also. I don't know if it's normal but you're not alone.
