IH 990 in trouble

I just bought a 990 haybine this spring and set out to learn how to make hay. Trouble is, just as I was about to finish the field, the reel came loose from the belt pully. (I mean the belt was making the shaft go around but the reel wasn't going.) Since they are predicting another monsoon season next week, I just drilled a 5/16" hole through the big reel axle, through the short 1" shaft and put a 5" bolt through the whole works. Trouble is that it sheared off pretty fast. Any Suggestions? I hope I didn't buy a piece of junk that can't be fixed decent.

Travis,
Yes, with the belt off the pulley drives the reel quite easily. Question: When you said that yours was welded are you talking about the spot welds from the factory at the end of the short shaft, or something that you were able to come up with? Without tearing apart the big reel axle it is hard for me to imagine just what those spot welds are. Do you know how they were put together?
Thanks for your help. I'm anxious to get this thing figured out and finish cutting my hay.

Dave,

Sorry, wasn't thinking when I replied earlier--I realize what you are saying now. My reel has been welded to the pipe down the middle(the white pipe, approx. 3" dia)--looks like a previous owner may have hit a fencepost or something with it. When I said mine was welded I was talking about the belt pulley being welded onto the shaft that it goes on. Someone had let it get loose and wobble on the shaft and basically was bad enough I just decided to weld it and hope that I never need it off. Anyway, from what I under stand, your reel is turning totally independent from the "driveshaft" that the belt pulley drives. I will have to go look at mine today to get a better idea, but will probably be back in tonight and give you any ideas I might have.

Travis,
I think you see what I'm up against now. Here in N. Central Wisc. they are predicting alot of rain this week, but I'm still going to try to get it fixed. That way I will be ready as soon as the sun shines. Thanks for your help.
Dave.

Well, mine is actually welded to the shaft and luckily it is straight and I don't have any problems with it. I wouldn't think that the reel should turn that hard in the first place, with the belt off of it you should be able to spin the reel over pretty easily. I think I would be looking at it a little closer--the bolt you put in should hold it I would think.
