The flat metal area behind the cutterbar (NH 488 if it matters) is rusting.... several perforations already! Any suggestions for repair. I was thinking fiberglass or sheet metal, but that is just a rookie's guess. Any advice re the do's & dont's of whatever I should use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The obvious answer is to replace or weld in a patch,,,But I'll tell you what I did with a neighbors machine. He had a 479 with the same problem. So as a "temporary" fix I put in a plastic liner left over from a dump truck bed repair. Well the "temporary" fix lasted 5 years until he sold the farm, and as far as I know its still working. You can get the heavy grade sheet from various places, I got mine from Farmtek. But its sold as liners for truck beds and manure spreaders in sheets.

Laid down a base cover of roofing cement over the old metal, then attached the plastic with #10 screws and nuts.
